What is an SDS Max bit?
SDS Max uses a larger diameter shank than SDS Plus, with a different groove pattern designed to handle significantly higher torque and impact energy. This makes SDS Max bits and drills the standard choice for heavy-duty rotary hammers, large diameter core drilling, and demolition breakers, where SDS Plus bits would be undersized or unable to survive the force being transmitted through them. SDS Max and SDS Plus bits are not interchangeable: an SDS Max bit will not fit an SDS Plus chuck, and vice versa, so confirming your drill's chuck type before ordering is essential.
DEWALT SDS Max drill bits
DEWALT's SDS Max range covers diameters from 12mm up to 25mm across two standard lengths, 340mm and 540mm, including the 12 x 340mm, 16 x 340mm, 20 x 340mm, 16 x 540mm, 20 x 540mm, 22 x 540mm and 25 x 540mm. These suit heavy-duty rotary hammer drilling into concrete and masonry where a standard SDS Plus bit's capacity is exceeded, such as structural fixing, larger anchor installation, and services penetrations through thick concrete.
Faithfull SDS Max drill bits
Faithfull's SDS Max range extends further at both ends of the diameter scale, covering everything from the 12mm x 340mm up through 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 22mm, 25mm, 28mm, 30mm and up to the largest in the range, the 32mm x 520mm, the widest diameter SDS Max bit stocked here. Lengths run from 320mm through to 540mm, covering both standard and extended-reach drilling needs.
Choosing diameter and length
Diameter should match the fixing, anchor or service penetration you're installing exactly. For large structural anchors, heavy-duty fixings, and core drilling for pipes or cable runs through thick concrete or masonry, SDS Max's wider diameter range (up to 32mm here) gives capacity that SDS Plus simply can't match. Length needs to clear the total drilling depth with enough spare for dust and debris to escape the hole; the 520-540mm bits in this range suit deep penetrations and thick structural concrete, while 320-340mm bits cover more standard-depth heavy-duty drilling.
SDS Max vs SDS Plus: which system do I need?
SDS Plus is the standard system for everyday rotary hammer and combi drills, generally covering diameters up to around 25-30mm and used for routine fixing, cable clip and pipe bracket installation. SDS Max is the heavier-duty system, built for larger diameter concrete and masonry drilling, structural anchor installation, and demolition breaker work where SDS Plus bits and drills don't have the shank strength or torque capacity required.
