Combi tools: staples AND nails from one gun

Several tools in this collection are combi models that fire both staples and brad nails from the same magazine, with the operator setting whether to use staples or brads at the load stage. The advantage: one tool that covers both fastening types without carrying two separate guns. The Tacwise 140-180EL, 53-13EL, Duo 35, Ranger EL-Pro; the Rapid PRO R606, PBS151, PBS121, BTX530 and BTX140; the Batavia MAXXPACK; and the Stanley TRE550 are all combi tools. Staple systems: which one your gun takes

Staple guns take specific staple systems that are not interchangeable across brands. Common systems in this collection:

Cordless vs corded vs pneumatic: which format

• Cordless (4V, 7.2V, 12V, 18V): the versatile choice for site work, mixed jobs, occasional use and any application where portability matters more than sustained volume. Batteries deliver hundreds to thousands of fires per charge. Right for the vast majority of trade and hobby users today.
• Corded electric (240V): the workshop choice for continuous high-volume work in one location - upholstery workshops, insulation crews at a fixed staging area, cable clipping across large runs. No battery management, sustained power, cheaper per tool than 18V cordless equivalents.

Running out of consumables halfway through a job is one of the most common frustrations with fastening tools - buy in bulk for high-volume users.

Safety

• Contact safety trigger: all modern nail and staple guns include a contact safety trigger that prevents accidental discharge when the tool is not pressed against a workpiece. Do not defeat this feature.
• Eye protection: always wear safety glasses - occasional deflections and jam clearance risks make eye protection essential.
• Never fire toward yourself or others: keep the tool nose oriented at the workpiece; a misfire or over-fire can send the fastener through and beyond the workpiece.
• Disconnect power/air before jam clearance: disconnect the battery, unplug the mains, or disconnect the air line before opening the magazine to clear a jam.
• Know what is behind the workpiece: for wall fastening, understand what services are behind the plasterboard - cables, pipes and joist edges are all vulnerable to over-driven fasteners.
