Sadolin Wood Protection at MTN Shop UK

Founded in Denmark in 1907 and now part of the global Akzo Nobel group, Sadolin has been protecting exterior timber across northern Europe for over 115 years. The brand pioneered the translucent woodstain category, with formulations engineered to penetrate wood fibres, repel water and resist UV degradation while showcasing the natural grain. For UK weather, with frequent rain, freeze thaw cycles and summer UV, Sadolin's track record is hard to match.

Sadolin Classic Wood Protection

Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is the original base coat in the system, a translucent solvent based woodstain that penetrates deep into the timber to protect against rot, mould, blue stain and UV damage. It works as a standalone treatment on rough sawn timber, sheds, garden furniture and fences, or as a base before the Extra Durable top coat. Available in 1 litre and 2.5 litre tins in classic colours such as Heritage Oak.

Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain

Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain is the premium top coat, designed for high exposure timber such as front doors, windows, fascias and conservatories. The flexible film resists cracking, peeling and flaking, while the translucent finish lets the grain show through. Used as a top coat over Sadolin Classic, the system can deliver up to 6 years of protection on smooth planed timber, depending on exposure. Available in 500ml, 1 litre and 2.5 litre tins.

Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection

Where you want solid colour rather than grain visibility, Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection delivers a smooth, opaque finish in gloss or satin. It is ideal for sheds, summer houses, cladding, garage doors and rough sawn or previously painted timber. Superdec is water based, low odour and flexible, with a service life of up to 10 years on vertical surfaces in normal exposure. Popular options include Super White Gloss and Black Gloss in 1 litre and 5 litre tins.

Choosing between translucent and opaque finishes

  • Translucent (Classic, Extra Durable): showcases the wood grain, ideal for quality joinery, doors, windows and decking where the timber appearance is part of the look.
  • Opaque (Superdec): covers previous coats and hides timber grain, ideal for sheds, cladding, fences and any project where colour and uniformity matter more than grain.

Surface preparation and application

Sadolin performance depends on proper preparation. Remove old flaking paint or varnish with a paint stripper or scraper, sand the timber to bare wood where possible, fill cracks and holes with a wood filler, and ensure the surface is dry before application. Apply Sadolin with a good quality synthetic bristle brush in the direction of the grain. Two to three coats are typical, with the recommended drying time between coats on the tin. Work in temperatures above 8°C and avoid direct sunlight or imminent rain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sadolin is a Danish brand founded in 1907 and now part of the global Akzo Nobel group, one of the world's largest paint and coatings manufacturers. The brand has been protecting exterior timber across northern Europe for over 115 years and is the most recognised name in UK exterior wood protection.
Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is the base coat in the system, a translucent woodstain that penetrates deep into the timber. Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain is the premium top coat, with a flexible film that resists cracking, peeling and UV degradation. Used together as a system on smooth planed timber, they can deliver up to 6 years of protection.
Translucent Sadolin, such as Classic and Extra Durable, lets the natural wood grain show through, ideal for quality joinery, doors and decking. Opaque Sadolin, such as Superdec, covers the grain with solid colour, ideal for sheds, cladding and previously painted surfaces where uniform colour matters more than grain visibility.
Service life depends on exposure, surface preparation and application. Sadolin Extra Durable over Sadolin Classic can give up to 6 years on smooth planed timber in normal exposure. Sadolin Superdec can give up to 10 years on vertical surfaces. Horizontal surfaces such as decking and high exposure timber such as south facing doors typically need recoating more often.
Sadolin translucent woodstains need to penetrate the timber and will not bond properly over existing paint or varnish, so old coatings must be removed first. Sadolin Superdec is opaque and can be applied over sound previously painted surfaces after light sanding and a suitable primer where required. Always check the technical data sheet for the specific product before application.
Use a good quality synthetic bristle brush, since most modern Sadolin formulations are water based or hybrid. A 50 mm to 75 mm wall brush works for sheds and cladding, a 25 mm to 50 mm brush for doors and windows, and a 12 mm to 25 mm sash brush for glazing bars and detail. Purdy® and Faithfull brushes hold more product and leave a smoother finish than budget alternatives.
