Paint Brushes at MTN Shop UK

A good paint brush holds more paint, releases it evenly and leaves a clean cut line at the edges, all while resisting bristle loss over the life of the job. Cheap brushes shed bristles into the finish and force you to back brush constantly. Trade quality brushes from Purdy®, Faithfull, Stanley and BlueSpot Tools are engineered to hold more product, cut sharper and last longer through repeated cleaning and reuse.

Purdy® premium brushes

Founded in Portland, Oregon in 1925, Purdy® is one of the most respected names in professional decorating. Each brush is still handcrafted in the USA, with a reputation for cutting precision and durability that justifies the premium price. Highlights in our range include the Purdy® XL™ Elite™ Monarch™ Paint Brush 4in, with a tapered Tynex® and orel® blend that picks up more paint, releases it smoothly and holds a fine edge on emulsion and water based finishes.

Faithfull and Stanley trade brushes

  • Faithfull: the largest brand in our brush range with 34 products covering everything from utility brush sets for general site work to professional cutting in brushes, wall brushes and varnish brushes. The Faithfull Utility Paint Brush 10 Piece Set is a popular choice for jobs that need a mix of sizes at trade cost.
  • Stanley: 22 brushes covering the Stanley Max Finish, Decor and trade ranges, ideal for both gloss and emulsion applications.
  • BlueSpot Tools: a budget friendly option for utility and rough work brushes where consumable use is expected.

Synthetic vs natural bristle

Choosing the right bristle type protects both your finish and your investment in the brush:

  • Synthetic bristle (nylon, polyester, Tynex®, orel®): best for water based and emulsion paints, holds shape when wet, easy to clean, longer service life. Most modern decorating uses synthetic.
  • Natural bristle (hog hair, ox hair): best for oil based gloss, varnish, stains and shellac, holds more solvent based paint, leaves a smoother finish on traditional coatings.
  • Mixed bristle: hybrid blends for users who want one brush for both water and oil based work.

Choosing the right brush size

Match the brush to the surface and the level of detail required:

  • 12 to 25 mm: sash brushes for window frames, narrow trim and detail work.
  • 38 to 50 mm: general purpose brushes for skirting, architrave, door frames and edges.
  • 63 to 75 mm: wall brushes for doors, panels and medium areas.
  • 100 mm and above: large wall brushes for emulsion on walls and ceilings, and for masonry finishes.
  • Angled brushes: ideal for cutting in clean lines at ceilings, corners and around switches and sockets.

Brush care and storage

Quality brushes reward proper care. Clean immediately after use with water for emulsion or with white spirit for oil based paints. Reshape the bristles and hang the brush by the handle to dry. For breaks during a job, wrap the brush in clingfilm to keep paint workable for several hours, or store overnight in a sealed bag in the fridge. With this care, a Purdy® or Faithfull brush will last for dozens of jobs.

Build your decorating kit

Frequently Asked Questions

Synthetic bristle brushes, made from nylon, polyester or branded blends such as Tynex® and orel®, are best for water based and emulsion paints. They hold their shape when wet and are easy to clean. Natural bristle brushes, made from hog or ox hair, are best for oil based gloss, varnish and stains, where they hold more solvent based paint and leave a smoother finish.
Purdy® brushes are still handcrafted in the USA, founded in Portland, Oregon in 1925. The premium price reflects superior bristle blends, precise tapering for cutting in, longer service life and better paint pick up and release. Professional decorators choose Purdy® because the cost per job, spread over many uses, often works out lower than cheaper brushes.
Match the brush size to the surface. Use 12 to 25 mm for window frames and fine trim, 38 to 50 mm for skirting, architrave and door frames, 63 to 75 mm for doors, panels and medium areas, and 100 mm or larger for walls, ceilings and masonry. Angled brushes are ideal for cutting in clean lines at corners and ceilings.
Clean brushes immediately after use. Use water for emulsion and water based paints, white spirit for oil based gloss and varnish. Work the cleaner through the bristles, rinse, reshape and hang by the handle to dry. For breaks during a job, wrap the brush in clingfilm or store overnight in a sealed bag in the fridge to keep the paint workable.
A sash brush is a small brush, typically 12 to 25 mm wide, with bristles trimmed to a fine point or angle. It is designed for narrow trim work such as window frames, glazing bars, mouldings and fine detail. Many decorators use a sash brush together with a wider wall brush to cover both fine work and main surfaces.
Brush sets are practical for general site and DIY use, where you need a range of sizes without buying each individually. The Faithfull Utility Paint Brush 10 Piece Set is a popular example, giving you small, medium and large brushes at a trade friendly price. For premium finish work, professionals usually invest in individual Purdy® or Faithfull brushes in the exact sizes they prefer.
