3M Personal Protective Equipment at MTN Shop UK

3M is one of the most recognised names in industrial PPE worldwide, founded as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company in 1902. Over 120 years on, 3M's Peltor and First Base brands are specified by site managers, factories and industrial maintenance teams across the UK for hearing protection, bump cap head protection and disposable coveralls. At MTN Shop UK we sell the 3M range covering the Peltor X series ear defenders in headband and helmet mount versions, the First Base bump cap in micro peak and reduced peak styles, and the Type 5/6 disposable coverall for dust and splash protection.

Our 3M collection is built around three core PPE categories: the Peltor X4 (SNR 33dB) and X5 (SNR 37dB) ear defenders for noisy sites and workshops, the First Base bump cap for environments where a hard hat is not required but bumps and scrapes are a risk, and the Coverall 4530 for handling dust, fibres and limited liquid splash. Sizes run from M to 4XL on the coveralls, with colour options including black and navy on the bump caps.

3M Safety Equipment at MTN Shop UK

Founded in Two Harbors, Minnesota in 1902 as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, 3M has grown into one of the most respected names in industrial safety, with a PPE catalogue that spans hearing, respiratory, head and body protection. The brand's strength is its research and testing background, which means 3M PPE comes with detailed performance ratings against the relevant EN standards, letting trade users and site managers specify protection that matches the actual hazard rather than guessing.

3M Peltor X series ear defenders

The Peltor X series is 3M's flagship passive hearing protection range, designed for noisy industrial environments where powered or electronic protection is not required. Our collection includes:

  • 3M Peltor X5: the top of the X range with an SNR of 37dB, the highest attenuation in the line. Available in headband and helmet mount versions for workshops, demolition sites, ground engineering and any environment with sustained high noise exposure.
  • 3M Peltor X4: rated at SNR 33dB, with a lower profile that suits operators who need to wear ear defenders for long periods. Also available in headband and helmet mount versions.

The helmet mount versions clip into the standard 30mm slots on most safety helmets, including our Kask and Centurion ranges. The headband versions are the right choice when no hard hat is being worn.

3M First Base bump cap

The 3M First Base bump cap is designed for environments where a full safety helmet is not required, but accidental bumps against pipework, scaffolding, low ceilings or vehicle parts are a real risk. It meets the EN 812 standard for industrial bump caps. Our range covers two peak options:

  • First Base Micro Peak: a low profile cap with minimal peak, ideal for confined spaces, vehicle workshops and warehouse work where a full peak would obstruct view.
  • First Base Reduced Peak: a slightly larger peak for general industry, light construction and outdoor work where some sun protection is useful.

Both versions come in black and navy, and are designed to look like a baseball cap so they are accepted in environments where a hard hat would feel excessive.

3M Coverall 4530 (Type 5/6)

The 3M Coverall 4530 is a disposable protective coverall certified to Type 5/6, meaning it offers limited protection against airborne solid particulates (Type 5) and liquid splash and spray (Type 6). Common uses include asbestos awareness work, paint spraying, dust extraction, light chemical handling, cleanroom support and general industrial cleaning. Available in sizes M, L, XL, 2XL and 4XL, with elasticated cuffs, ankles and hood for a closer fit.

Choosing the right 3M PPE

  • Maximum noise attenuation: Peltor X5 (SNR 37dB).
  • Long duration use with lower profile: Peltor X4 (SNR 33dB).
  • Helmet integration: X4 or X5 helmet mount version.
  • Bumps without full hard hat: First Base Micro Peak (low profile) or Reduced Peak (general).
  • Dust and splash protection: Coverall 4530 Type 5/6.

Frequently Asked Questions

3M is an American multinational founded as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company in Two Harbors, Minnesota in 1902. Over 120 years on, 3M is one of the most respected names in industrial safety worldwide, with a PPE catalogue covering hearing, respiratory, head and body protection. The Peltor and First Base brands within 3M are particularly well known across UK industry.
The main difference is the level of noise attenuation. The Peltor X5 has an SNR (Single Number Rating) of 37dB, which is the highest in the X series and the right choice for the loudest environments. The Peltor X4 is rated at SNR 33dB with a lower profile, making it more comfortable for long duration use in moderately noisy workshops and sites. Both are available in headband and helmet mount versions.
SNR stands for Single Number Rating and is the figure used in Europe to indicate the noise attenuation of hearing protection. It is measured in decibels (dB) and represents the average reduction in sound the ear defender provides. A pair rated SNR 33dB will reduce noise reaching the ear by approximately 33dB. Always check the actual noise level on site and choose protection that brings exposure below 85dB.
A bump cap is a lightweight industrial head protector, typically shaped like a baseball cap, that protects against bumps and scrapes from fixed obstacles such as pipework, scaffolding, low ceilings and vehicle parts. It is NOT a substitute for a full safety helmet where falling objects are a risk. The 3M First Base range meets the EN 812 standard, which is the relevant standard for bump caps in the UK and Europe.
The helmet mount versions of the Peltor X4 and X5 use the standard 30mm slot found on most industrial safety helmets, including our Kask, Centurion and most other major brands. If you are unsure whether your helmet is compatible, check for the two 30mm slots on either side of the shell, or get in touch with us before ordering.
Type 5 and Type 6 are European classifications for protective coveralls. Type 5 (EN ISO 13982-1) covers protection against airborne solid particulates such as dust, fibres and powders. Type 6 (EN 13034) covers limited protection against liquid splash and spray. A coverall certified to both Type 5 and Type 6 covers most general industrial applications including asbestos awareness work, paint spraying, dust extraction and light chemical handling.
