In stage rigging they are used to build suspension systems for lighting rigs, speaker arrays, truss structures and scenic elements in theatre, live events and TV studios. MTN Shop UK stocks shackles and links from Doughty Engineering and Columbus McKinnon, two of the most trusted names in entertainment and industrial rigging hardware.

What to Look For

  • Type: bow shackles are suitable for multi-directional loads. Quick links are for lightweight connections such as safety bonds and accessories. Pear links are for connecting chain and hoist assemblies.
  • WLL / SWL: always match the rated load of the shackle or link to your total suspended load with an appropriate safety margin. Never exceed the rated WLL.
  • Size: shackle and link size determines both the pin diameter and the WLL. Always verify the correct size for your wire rope or chain diameter before ordering.
  • Inspection: all shackles and links should be inspected before every use for deformation, wear, corrosion and legibility of the WLL marking.

Pair with wire rope and fittings, safety bonds and our full rigging hardware range for a complete rigging solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shackles are used to connect wire rope, chain and rigging components together at a rated load capacity. D shackles are used for inline connections and bow shackles for multi-leg connections where the load is applied from multiple directions. All shackles should be stamped with their Safe Working Load and inspected before every use.
A Doughty bow shackle is a screw pin connector designed for multi-directional loading in overhead rigging, rated for higher loads and used with wire rope and slings. A Doughty quick link is a lightweight oval connector for fast tool-free connections such as attaching safety bonds and accessories, available in M6, M8 and M10 sizes up to 550kg.
A CM pear link is a connecting link shaped to fit the hook of a chain hoist or the end of a sling assembly. It provides a secure, load-rated connection point between rigging components. CM pear links are available in 5/8", 3/4" and 1" sizes and are certified for entertainment and industrial rigging applications.
Shackle size depends on the wire rope or chain diameter and the total load being suspended. Doughty bow shackles are available in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm sizes with WLL ratings stamped on each unit. Always ensure the shackle WLL exceeds your total suspended load including fixtures, cable and all attached accessories with an appropriate safety margin.
Before every use, inspect all Doughty shackles and CM links for visible deformation, bending or twisting of the body or pin, corrosion or pitting, wear on the bearing surfaces, and legibility of the WLL marking. Any shackle or link showing signs of damage or with an illegible WLL marking should be removed from service immediately and not used overhead.
