Jigsaws

Jigsaws for curved cuts, cut-outs, plunge cuts and detail work in wood, metal, plastic, laminate and composite materials, in every common format from compact one-handed cordless models through full-size professional brushless jigsaws with orbital action for the toughest cutting. This is the collection for kitchen fitters, joiners, cabinet makers, flooring installers, electricians and site chippies who need proper trade-grade jigsaws rather than the entry-level tools the merchant throws in with a starter kit.

You will find cordless 18V jigsaws across all the major platforms (Bosch Professional 18V, DEWALT 18V XR, Makita 18V LXT, Einhell Power X-Change, HiKOKI 18V, Black+Decker POWERCONNECT), corded 240V jigsaws for continuous mains-powered workshop use, brushless motor options (Bosch BC series, DEWALT XR Brushless, Einhell BL) for longer battery life and reduced maintenance, plus both top-handle jigsaws (the traditional grip for general cutting) and barrel-grip jigsaws (the low-profile hold for kitchen worktop and cabinet fitting where you cut close to the workpiece).

The brands here are the ones UK trade users specify: Bosch (the reference brand with the Professional GST range and the T-shank blade system originator), DEWALT (with the DCS334N XR Brushless), Einhell (with the Power X-Change TP-JS and TC-JS ranges), HiKOKI, Black+Decker (with the POWERCONNECT 18V and BES corded range), plus alternative brands from Makita, Milwaukee and Metabo.

Jigsaws – Product list

Cordless and corded jigsaws at MTN Shop UK

The jigsaw is the most versatile cutting tool most trade users own. It cuts curves and straight lines, plunge-cuts into the middle of a sheet, works through wood, metal, plastic and composite materials with the right blade, and lives in the tool bag rather than the workshop because it goes everywhere. The right jigsaw with the right blade will cut a kitchen worktop cleaner than most trade users would guess is possible; the wrong jigsaw with a worn blade will chip laminate flooring, tear melamine and wander off a straight cut in ways that are impossible to hide. The Jigsaws collection at MTN Shop UK is built around trade-grade tools from the six main manufacturers that dominate the UK cordless jigsaw market.

Bosch Professional GST range

Bosch Professional is the reference brand in the jigsaw category, both because Bosch invented the T-shank blade fitting that has become the universal industry standard, and because the GST range is what most UK trade users specify when they upgrade beyond the starter tool. The naming system is worth decoding:

  • GST 18V-LI B / GST 18V-LI S: the earlier-generation Professional 18V range with brushed motor. B = top-handle (Bügelgriff), S = barrel-grip (Stabgriff). Reliable trade tools that pre-date the brushless generation.
  • GST 18V-125 S / GST 18V-95 B: the mid-generation Professional 18V range. The number after the V denotes cutting capacity in wood (mm). 125 S is barrel-grip, 95 B is top-handle.
  • GST 18V-155 BC: the current-generation brushless Professional jigsaw. BC = Brushless plus Connect (Bosch's tool tracking system). The 155mm cutting capacity in wood is class-leading, and the brushless motor extends run time and service life significantly.

DEWALT DCS334N XR Brushless

The DEWALT DCS334N XR Brushless Top Handle Jigsaw 18V is the DEWALT platform answer for the trade user already on the DEWALT XR ecosystem: brushless motor for extended runtime and long service life, top-handle configuration for general cutting work, and full compatibility with all DEWALT 18V XR batteries. Supplied as a bare unit for existing DEWALT XR users. The DCS334N is the specification when you want to keep everything on one battery platform rather than adding a second charger and battery type just for the jigsaw.

Einhell Power X-Change (TP-JS and TC-JS)

The Einhell Power X-Change 18V platform is the German value specialist's answer to the premium cordless brands, at a significantly lower price point without the compromise on core function. The jigsaw range covers:

  • TC-JS 18 / TC-JS 18/70 Li: the entry cordless jigsaws for hobby and light trade use, brushed motor, single-speed and multi-speed variants.
  • TP-JS 18/135 Li BL / TP-JST 18/135 Li BL: the higher-specification brushless jigsaws (BL suffix = brushless) with 135mm cutting capacity in wood. Solo variants are supplied as bare units for existing Einhell Power X-Change users.

The Einhell Power X-Change platform is worth considering if you are new to cordless and value the tool at trade-usable spec but do not need the premium features that push the Bosch and DEWALT prices up.

HiKOKI and Black+Decker

HiKOKI (formerly Hitachi Koki) is the Japanese trade brand with the CJ18DAW2Z on the HiKOKI 18V multivolt-compatible platform. Black+Decker is the domestic and DIY-focused brand under the same corporate umbrella as DEWALT, with two products in the collection: the BES602 400W 240V corded jigsaw (the traditional single-speed mains jigsaw for occasional use) and the BDCJS18C13 POWERCONNECT™ 18V cordless jigsaw on the Black+Decker POWERCONNECT battery platform.

Top-handle vs barrel-grip: which grip style

Modern jigsaws come in two body styles, and the choice matters more than most first-time buyers realise:

  • Top-handle (D-handle) jigsaws: the traditional configuration with a D-shape handle on top of the motor. Comfortable for general cutting, easier to control on straight cuts, and the standard specification for site work and general joinery. All the DEWALT, HiKOKI and most Einhell jigsaws in this collection are top-handle. Bosch identifies top-handle with the letter B.
  • Barrel-grip jigsaws: the low-profile body without a top handle, held from the front like a cylinder. Preferred by kitchen fitters, cabinet makers and worktop installers because the low profile lets you cut close to walls, into corners and under fitted cabinets. The Bosch GST S-suffix models are barrel-grip.

For general site work and joinery, top-handle is the more versatile choice. For fitted kitchen work and cabinet installation, barrel-grip is the trade specification.

Brushless vs brushed motors

Brushless motors use electronic commutation instead of physical carbon brushes to drive rotation. The practical benefits for a jigsaw are significant: longer runtime per battery charge (30 to 50 percent typical improvement), longer motor service life (no brush wear to replace), less internal heat build-up so the motor tolerates continuous use better, and generally quieter operation. Brushless jigsaws in this collection include the DEWALT DCS334N XR, Bosch GST 18V-155 BC, and Einhell TP-JS 18/135 BL variants. For daily trade use, brushless is worth the price premium; for occasional use, brushed motors are still perfectly adequate.

Cordless vs corded

  • Cordless 18V: the modern trade default. No trailing cables to catch on the workpiece or trip over, works anywhere on site, batteries run several full days of typical use. The main downside is running out of battery at the wrong moment, solved by carrying a spare and by planning charging.
  • Corded 240V: the workshop specification for continuous production use where sustained power output matters more than portability. The Black+Decker BES602 400W is the single-speed corded model in this collection, sized for occasional workshop use rather than trade daily driver.

Cutting capacity: what the numbers mean

Cutting capacity is the maximum thickness of material the jigsaw can cut in a single pass. Typical figures given by manufacturers:

  • Wood: 65mm to 155mm (higher numbers indicate more powerful jigsaws). Most trade jigsaws deliver 90mm to 135mm in wood.
  • Aluminium: typically 20mm to 25mm.
  • Steel: typically 8mm to 12mm for standard trade jigsaws.

Capacity numbers assume the correct blade for the material. A 155mm rated jigsaw will still struggle in thick oak with a worn or wrong-tooth blade.

Choosing the right jigsaw

  • Kitchen fitting and cabinet installation: Bosch GST 18V-125 S barrel-grip (or GST 18V-155 BC for brushless upgrade).
  • General site and joinery work: DEWALT DCS334N XR Brushless (if on DEWALT platform), Bosch GST 18V-95 B (if on Bosch Professional), or Einhell TP-JS 18/135 BL (value trade specification).
  • Existing Bosch Professional 18V user: Bosch GST 18V-155 BC brushless (top spec) or GST 18V-125 S barrel-grip.
  • Existing DEWALT 18V XR user: DEWALT DCS334N XR Brushless bare unit.
  • Existing Einhell Power X-Change user: Einhell TP-JS 18/135 BL bare unit (brushless).
  • Occasional home and workshop use: Black+Decker BES602 400W 240V corded (single-speed simplicity) or BDCJS18C13 POWERCONNECT cordless (kit version with battery included).
  • Heavy production use in hardwood and thick timber: Bosch GST 18V-155 BC (155mm capacity, brushless motor).

Blade compatibility: T-shank is the standard

All the modern jigsaws in this collection use the Bosch T-shank blade fitting, which has become the universal UK standard. Blades from Bosch, DEWALT, Makita, Milwaukee, Metabo, HiKOKI, Einhell, Black+Decker and LENOX all fit the same T-shank chuck, so you are not locked into buying blades from the tool manufacturer. Blade choice matters as much as the jigsaw itself: HCS (High Carbon Steel) for wood, BiM (bi-metal) for metal and multi-material, reverse-tooth for chip-free cuts in laminate and melamine, carbide-grit for tile. See our dedicated jigsaw blades collection for the full range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Top-handle (D-handle) jigsaws have the traditional D-shape handle on top of the motor, giving comfortable control for general cutting and the standard specification for site work and joinery. Barrel-grip jigsaws have a low-profile body without a top handle, held from the front like a cylinder, which lets you cut close to walls, into corners and under fitted cabinets. For general site and joinery work, top-handle is more versatile. For fitted kitchen work, cabinet installation and worktop cut-outs, barrel-grip is the trade specification because the lower profile fits into places a top-handle jigsaw physically cannot reach. Bosch identifies top-handle with the letter B (Bügelgriff) and barrel-grip with S (Stabgriff) in the GST range naming.
Yes. All modern jigsaws use the Bosch T-shank blade fitting, which has become the universal industry standard. Blades from Bosch, DEWALT, Makita, Milwaukee, Metabo, HiKOKI, Einhell, Black+Decker, LENOX, Irwin, Faithfull and Bahco all fit the same T-shank chuck, so you can buy blades from any manufacturer regardless of the jigsaw brand. Older jigsaws (typically pre-2000) sometimes used U-shank blades, which are still available for legacy tools but are far less common today. If your jigsaw was made after roughly 2005, it takes T-shank. Blade choice by material is more important than blade brand: HCS for wood, bi-metal for metal, reverse-tooth for laminate and melamine, carbide-grit for tile.
A brushless motor uses electronic commutation instead of physical carbon brushes to drive rotation, giving significant practical benefits: longer runtime per battery charge (30 to 50 percent more work per charge is typical), longer motor service life (no brush wear to replace, no brush maintenance), less internal heat build-up so the motor tolerates continuous heavy use better, and generally quieter operation. For daily trade use, the price premium for brushless is paid back within the tool's life through additional runtime and reduced maintenance. For occasional home and workshop use, brushed motors are perfectly adequate and cheaper. The brushless jigsaws in this collection include the DEWALT DCS334N XR, Bosch GST 18V-155 BC, and Einhell TP-JS 18/135 BL variants.
Bare unit (or bare tool) means the jigsaw is supplied without batteries or charger. Most of the trade-grade jigsaws in this collection are supplied as bare units because they are designed for users who already have batteries and chargers on the relevant 18V platform (DEWALT XR, Bosch Professional 18V, Makita 18V LXT, HiKOKI 18V, Einhell Power X-Change). If you already own other tools on the same platform, buying bare units is significantly cheaper than duplicate batteries and chargers you do not need. If you are new to the platform, either buy a kit version that includes batteries and charger, or buy the batteries and charger separately. The Einhell TC-JS 18/70 Li and Black+Decker BDCJS18C13 in this collection are the kit versions that include batteries.
