Replacing a euro cylinder, fitting a key safe to masonry, fitting hasps and staples to a shed or replacing a window lock are generally within the scope of a competent DIY installer with the right tools (cordless drill, masonry bit, screwdriver). Fitting a mortice lock to a new door, rekeying master keyed systems, or installing high security safes requires more skill and is generally a locksmith job. Where insurance backed installation is required (Sold Secure key safes, BS3621 mortice locks), follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly or use a registered MLA (Master Locksmiths Association) locksmith.
Use a graphite or PTFE based lubricant designed for cylinder mechanisms (such as ABUS PS88) every six to twelve months. Avoid thick oils on cylinders, as they collect grit and lead to stiff or jammed locks over time. For outdoor padlocks, gates and hasps, a light spray of WD-40® or 3-IN-ONE® on the shackle and body protects against weather. Stiff locks are usually a sign of dust ingress, salt corrosion or worn key cuts. If a key needs to be wiggled to turn, the cylinder is on its way out and should be replaced before it fails completely.
