What is a masonry bit?
A masonry bit uses a round shank compatible with any standard, keyless or combi drill chuck, unlike SDS Plus and SDS Max bits which require a dedicated SDS-fitting chuck. The tip is typically tungsten carbide, ground to cut through brick, block, concrete and natural stone through a combination of rotation and, where the drill supports it, hammer action. Masonry bits are the everyday choice for drilling wall plug holes, fixing points and general masonry work with a standard drill rather than a rotary hammer.

Choosing diameter and length
Match diameter exactly to the wall plug or fixing being installed, since an undersized hole won't take the plug and an oversized hole reduces holding strength. Length should clear your fixing depth with enough spare for dust to escape the hole; shorter bits from 75-150mm suit most everyday wall plug and fixing work, while longer 300-400mm bits are needed for deeper drilling or thicker masonry walls.
