ABUS Mechanical at MTN Shop UK

Founded in 1924 by August Bremicker, ABUS began as a small workshop producing padlocks in Volmarstein, Germany. A century later the company is one of the largest mechanical security manufacturers in Europe, still family run and headquartered in Wetter, North Rhine-Westphalia. ABUS holds VdS approvals on much of its range, which is the German insurance industry's independent product testing mark, and complies with the European EN 12320 standard for padlocks. Trade users, fleet managers, site managers and locksmiths specify ABUS because the steel quality is consistent, the locking mechanisms resist picking and bumping, and the keyed alike options make life easier for organisations with multiple sites.

ABUS padlocks

The padlock range is the largest part of our ABUS collection, with nearly 400 products. Key ranges include:

  • TITALIUM™: a titanium aluminium alloy body that is lighter than brass and steel but more weather resistant, ideal for outdoor gates, shutters, sheds and site cabins. Models include the 82TI shutter padlock and the 90RK closed shackle series, both available in keyed alike sets.
  • Diskus: the iconic round stainless steel padlock with a body that surrounds the shackle on most sides, leaving very little exposed to bolt croppers. Specified for shutters, containers, lorries and refrigeration trailers.
  • Closed shackle: models with the shackle protected by raised shoulders, dramatically reducing the area a bolt cropper can grip. The right choice for high security warehouses, plant compounds and storage units.
  • Brass marine: solid brass padlocks resistant to salt corrosion, used on boat hatches, dock gates and coastal site equipment.
  • Combination: keyless padlocks for lockers, shared storage and any situation where issuing keys is impractical.

ABUS euro cylinders and door hardware

With 34 euro cylinders in our range, ABUS covers the standard EN 1303 cylinder format used across UK and European multi point lock doors (uPVC, composite and timber). Cylinder ranges include anti snap, anti bump and anti pick high security models, available in single, double and thumbturn configurations. We also stock door hardware, mortice and rim spares, and master keyed cylinder systems for landlords, letting agents and facilities teams.

Hasps, staples and shackles

The collection includes 29 hasps and staples for gates, sheds, garages and site cabins, plus 87 shackles and accessories matched to the various padlock body sizes. Choosing the right hasp is as important as choosing the padlock: a high security padlock fitted to a thin gauge hasp gives no protection against attack.

Lockout tagout and industrial security

ABUS supplies a lockout tagout range used in factories, plants and workshops for isolating machinery during maintenance. Colour coded padlocks, hasps and tags allow safe isolation of energy sources during planned maintenance and emergency shutdowns.

Locksmith spares and maintenance

The collection covers 38 locksmith spares including replacement cylinders, master keys, lock cores and cam designs, plus the PS88 Lock Lubricating Spray (50ml), a graphite based lubricant designed for cylinder mechanisms that does not attract dust the way oil based lubricants can. Regular use of PS88 extends cylinder life and prevents the gradual stiffness that leads to broken keys.

Choosing the right ABUS padlock

  • Outdoor weather exposure: TITALIUM™ for general use, brass for marine and salt air.
  • High attack risk: closed shackle or Diskus round padlocks.
  • Shutters and containers: Diskus or TITALIUM™ shutter padlock.
  • Multiple sites or vehicles: keyed alike (KA) sets for fleet management.
  • Shared lockers and storage: combination padlocks for keyless access.
  • Industrial isolation: lockout tagout colour coded range.

Frequently Asked Questions

ABUS is a German mechanical security manufacturer founded in 1924 by August Bremicker in Volmarstein. The name stands for August Bremicker und Söhne. Four generations on, the company is still family run from its headquarters in Wetter, North Rhine-Westphalia, and is one of the largest mechanical security manufacturers in Europe.
TITALIUM™ is an ABUS proprietary titanium aluminium alloy used for padlock bodies. It is lighter than brass and steel but offers better weather resistance, making it the right choice for outdoor gates, shutters, sheds and site cabins where weight matters and the lock is exposed to rain. Brass remains preferable for marine and salt air environments because it resists corrosion even better, while hardened steel is still used where maximum cut resistance is required.
Keyed alike (KA) means a set of padlocks all open with the same key, which is useful for organisations managing multiple gates, lockers, cabinets or sites with one key per person. Keyed differently (KD) means each padlock has its own unique key. ABUS supplies most popular padlock models in both KA sets (typically labelled KA followed by a reference number) and KD single units.
A closed shackle padlock has raised shoulders on the body that protect most of the shackle, leaving only a small section exposed when locked. This dramatically reduces the area a bolt cropper can grip, making the padlock much harder to defeat by cutting. Closed shackle padlocks are the right choice for high security warehouses, plant compounds, storage units and any application where attack is a realistic risk.
The Diskus is the iconic ABUS round stainless steel padlock, designed so the body surrounds the shackle on most sides. Very little of the shackle is exposed when locked, making it extremely difficult to attack with bolt croppers or pry bars. The Diskus is the standard choice for shutters, containers, lorries and refrigerated trailers across the UK.
Apply ABUS PS88 Lock Lubricating Spray every six to twelve months, more often if the padlock is exposed to rain, salt air or dusty conditions. PS88 is a graphite based lubricant designed for cylinder mechanisms that does not attract dust the way oil based sprays can. Avoid using thick oils or generic lubricants on cylinders, since they collect grit and lead to stiff or jammed locks over time.
