Getting the wrong staple system means the gun won't fire at all, since systems like Rapid 13, Rapid 53, Rapid 140, Stanley TRA and Arrow T50 aren't interchangeable. Check your gun's manual, the moulded marking on the magazine, or an empty box before ordering refills.

Staple systems: know which one your gun takes
Nearly every staple gun on the UK market takes one of a handful of systems, and they are not interchangeable. Rapid 53 is a medium-duty system with a wider crown, suited to cable clipping, upholstery and general site work, available in 6mm and 8mm leg lengths. Rapid 140, also used by Tacwise as the 140 series, is the heavy-duty flat crown system for roofing felt, insulation battens and hardwood, running from 6mm up to 14mm. Rapid 13 is the fine wire flat crown system for lighter general work. Stanley's TRA range covers TRA2 light-duty and TRA7 heavy-duty sub-ranges for the Sharpshooter and FatMax hand tackers, and Arrow's T50 is the US-originated heavy-duty system widely used for upholstery, insulation and roofing felt.
Flat narrow crown staples
Stanley's Flat Narrow Crown range, in 10mm CT306T and 12mm CT308T, uses a narrower crown profile suited to finer trim and upholstery work where a wide crown staple would be too visible or bulky.
Finish staples for pneumatic tackers
Bostitch's SX50 Finish Staples range, in 19mm, 30mm and 35mm, is built for pneumatic narrow crown staplers used in furniture assembly, upholstery and cabinet work, where a clean, low-profile fastening matters.
Insulated crown staples
The DEWALT Insulated Crown Staples (25mm x 19mm) add an insulating crown cover, purpose-built for securing electrical cable without the staple crimping or damaging the cable sheath, a common requirement for electricians running cable along joists and studwork.
Cable staples
The Rapid 7/12mm Cable Staples are shaped specifically to straddle and secure cable without crushing it, distinct from general-purpose flat crown staples designed for fabric or sheet material.
Headless pins
The Rapid 9/15mm Headless Pins leave virtually no visible entry mark, suited to delicate trim and moulding work where even a fine staple crown would show.
Brad and finish nails for nail guns
For finish nailers rather than staplers, this range covers three common gauges. 18-gauge brad nails, including Tacwise 25mm and the Rapid No.8 range from 25mm up to 50mm, suit delicate trim, beading and lightweight moulding. 16-gauge straight finish nails, in Tacwise's range from 20mm up to 40mm, are the standard gauge for skirting, architrave and general second-fix trim. 15-gauge hardened finish nails, in 30mm, 35mm and 50mm, are the heaviest gauge here, used for door frames and thicker structural trim. Angled 16-gauge and 18-gauge nails, built for angled-magazine nailers, are also available for jobs needing an angled approach into corners a straight nailer can't reach.
Staple systems and selection kits
For general trade use, the Tacwise 180 18 Gauge Nail Selection (Pack 4000) bundles a spread of common lengths in one purchase, useful when the exact length needed on a job can vary.
Staple removers
The Rapid R3 Staple Remover lifts staples cleanly without damaging the surrounding material, useful for reworking fabric, removing old staples before restapling, or correcting a misplaced fastening.
Choosing finish and material
Galvanised staples suit general interior use and moderately damp conditions. Stainless steel, such as the Rapid 13/6, is the right choice for coastal buildings, roofing felt on unheated structures, and any long-term outdoor exposure where galvanised finish would eventually corrode.
Choosing leg length
For insulation and thin material, leg length should be at least twice the material thickness. For structural roofing felt, use the longest length your gun will take, typically 10-12mm, to grip the timber substrate through the felt and any underlayer.
