Every cordless tool is only as good as its batteries. A second pack means one is always charging while the other is in use; a higher-capacity pack means longer runtime between charges; and a replacement pack brings an ageing tool back to full working life. This guide explains voltage, capacity and battery types so you choose the right pack.

Voltage and capacity (Ah)

Two numbers define a battery. Voltage (V) sets the platform and roughly the power available: 12V for compact tools, 18V for the mainstream of professional cordless, and 36V, 40V or 54V for high-demand tools. A tool only accepts batteries of its own voltage platform. Amp-hours (Ah) measure capacity - how long the battery runs between charges. A 5.0Ah pack runs longer than a 2.0Ah pack of the same voltage, but weighs more and costs more. Choose the voltage your tool requires, then choose higher Ah for longer runtime and lower Ah for lighter weight. For all-day use of a grinder or saw, 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah makes sense; for a compact drill, 2.0Ah to 4.0Ah is usually plenty. The Makita BL1860B (18V 6.0Ah) and BL1830B (18V 3.0Ah) show the two ends of that range on one platform.

Standard versus high-output batteries

Not all packs of the same voltage perform the same. High-output batteries use premium cells to deliver more current for power-hungry tools and to perform better in the cold:

• Metabo LiHD: high-density packs like the Metabo 18V 5.5Ah LiHD deliver strong sustained output for demanding tools.
• DeWalt FlexVolt and POWERSTACK: FlexVolt packs (DCB547 9.0/3.0Ah, DCB546 6.0/2.0Ah) switch between 18V and 54V; POWERSTACK packs (like the DCBP318 3.5Ah) use pouch cells for compact high power.
• Bosch ProCORE: higher-density 18V packs such as the ProCORE18V and ProCORE18V+ 8.0Ah for maximum sustained current.
• Evolution EXT and others: higher-capacity value packs like the Evolution R18BAT-Li8 (18V 8.0Ah) for extended runtime.
• Standard packs (DeWalt XR, Makita LXT, Black+Decker): excellent all-round performance for the majority of tools at a lower price.

Choose high-output packs for large grinders, circular saws, SDS hammers and other high-drain tools used hard all day; choose standard packs for general drilling, driving and lighter tasks.

Multi-voltage and multi-Ah batteries

Some batteries adapt to the tool. Multi-voltage packs - DeWalt FlexVolt (18/54V) and HiKOKI MultiVolt (18/36V) - automatically switch voltage to suit the tool, so one battery serves both standard and high-demand tools on the same brand, and remains backward compatible with the brand's 18V tools. Multi-Ah packs, like the Einhell Multi-Ah Power X-Change battery (18V 5.0 to 8.0Ah), report different capacities depending on the tool to balance power and runtime. These give one pack more flexibility across a range of tools.

Battery formats and special types

• Slide / rail packs: the common professional format that slides onto the foot of the tool - the standard across DeWalt XR, Makita LXT, Metabo, HiKOKI and Einhell.
• Twin packs: two batteries supplied together at a better price than buying singly - such as the Einhell Power X-Change twin packs and the HiKOKI KC18DDXJBZ triple pack, ideal for rotating packs so one is always ready.
• Sealed and PLUS batteries: Einhell SEALED Power X-Change PLUS packs add extra protection against dust and moisture for tougher conditions, while slimline packs keep weight and bulk down.
• XGT 40V max: Makita's high-power platform, separate from LXT, with packs like the BL4025 XGT (40V max 2.5Ah) for XGT tools.

Match the platform to your tools

Batteries are not cross-compatible between brands - a DeWalt XR pack will not fit a Makita LXT tool, and vice versa. Within a single brand and platform, packs are generally interchangeable, so any Makita 18V LXT battery runs any Makita 18V LXT tool. Watch for separate platforms within a brand too: Makita LXT (18V) and Makita XGT (40V max) use different batteries. Always confirm the exact brand, platform and voltage before buying. If you are unsure which pack your tool takes, check the model number of your existing battery.

Genuine batteries

We recommend genuine manufacturer batteries. They are matched to the tool's electronics and protection systems, hold their rated capacity, perform reliably, and keep your tool warranty intact. Third-party or copy batteries can carry higher fire risk, may not communicate correctly with the tool's control electronics, and can void warranties. For safety, reliability and long-term value, genuine packs are the safer choice - especially for professional daily use.

Battery care and safety

• Storage charge: store Li-ion packs at roughly 40 to 60 percent charge in a cool, dry place, not fully flat or fully charged.
• Temperature: avoid extreme heat or cold; let a hot pack cool before charging.
• Regular top-ups: Li-ion prefers frequent partial charges to repeated deep discharges - recharge before a pack is completely flat.
• Handle with care: a dropped, punctured, swollen or overheating pack is a fire risk - stop using it and recycle it correctly.
• Recycling (WEEE): never put Li-ion batteries in general waste - they can cause fires in bins and trucks. Recycle them through a battery collection point or WEEE scheme.
