Safes & Key Safes – Product list

Safes and Key Safes at MTN Shop UK

A safe or key safe is only as good as the test it has passed. Insurance backed installations in the UK typically require a key safe that carries Sold Secure and Secured by Design (SBD) accreditation, while fire and water resistant safes for documents and digital media need an independent test mark such as ETL or UL showing the temperature and time the contents will survive. The collection at MTN Shop UK covers the full range, from a 20 pound portable lock box for handing over keys to a tradesman, through Sold Secure key safes for front of property installations, up to fire and water resistant chests holding cash, deeds and computer drives.

Master Lock key lock boxes and Select Access® range

The Master Lock range is the largest part of our collection, with 22 products covering the most common key storage scenarios:

  • Master Lock 5400E Portable Shackled Combination Key Lock Box: a hardened steel box with a shackle that hooks over a door handle, railing or fixed point. Holds up to 3 keys, opened with a 4 digit resettable combination. The right choice for handing over property access to cleaners, contractors or guests without sharing a key.
  • Master Lock 5401 Medium Select Access® Key Lock Box (grey): wall mounted key safe with capacity for up to 3 keys, 4 digit combination, weather resistant body for outdoor installation.
  • Master Lock 5403E Large Select Access® Key Lock Box (grey): larger wall mounted version with capacity for up to 5 keys, ideal for properties with multiple keys or holiday lets where guests need access to outbuildings, garages and gates.
  • Master Lock 5426 Sold Secure SBD Key Lock Box: the top of the Master Lock key safe range, holding Sold Secure and Secured by Design accreditation. The right choice when an insurance policy specifies a graded key safe or when local police guidance requires SBD certification.

Master Lock fire and water resistant safes

For paperwork, deeds, passports, cash and digital media, the Master Lock fire and water resistant range covers safes and chests rated for both heat and water immersion:

  • Large Fire & Waterproof Security Chest: a portable chest with key lock, suitable for storing documents, USB drives and small valuables.
  • XX-Large Digital Fire & Water Safe: an electronic keypad safe with the largest internal capacity in the range, designed for households, small businesses and home offices holding both documents and cash.

The rating to look for is the time the safe protects contents at a given external temperature, typically 30 minutes or 60 minutes at around 843°C in independent testing, which is the temperature range of a domestic house fire.

Yale Locks Value Safe and Combination Key Cabinet

The Yale Locks contribution to the range covers entry level home safes and key cabinets:

  • Yale Locks Value Safe Small: a key locked safe for cash, jewellery and documents, suitable for bolting into a cupboard floor or wall.
  • Yale Locks Combination Key Cabinet: a wall mounted key cabinet holding multiple keys on numbered hooks, secured by a combination lock. The right choice for letting agents, offices, building managers and any environment where many keys need to be tracked and accessed by authorised people.

ABUS Mechanical and Squire complementary security

The collection also includes ABUS Mechanical and Squire padlocks, shackles and door hardware that are commonly used to back up the safe with a secondary layer of security: padlocking the gate, shed or outbuilding where the safe is mounted, or securing the cabinet that holds the safe in place. For more on these ranges see our ABUS Mechanical and Squire brand pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

A key safe is a small lockable box mounted to a wall (or shackled to a fixed point on portable models) that holds property keys behind a combination or keypad lock. Authorised people can be given the code to retrieve a key without the owner needing to be present, which is useful for tradespeople, cleaners, holiday let guests, carers and family members. The keys are released by entering the correct combination on the front of the safe.
Sold Secure is an independent product testing body in the UK that grades security products based on their resistance to attack. A Sold Secure key safe has been subjected to a defined set of attack tests and passed, which gives insurers and police forces a clear benchmark for what counts as adequate security. Many home insurance policies specify a Sold Secure rated key safe as a condition of cover, particularly if a key safe is installed near a front door. The Master Lock 5426 in our range carries Sold Secure and Secured by Design (SBD) accreditation.
Both are wall mounted Select Access® key safes from Master Lock, opened with a 4 digit combination, supplied in grey with a weather resistant body. The 5401 is the medium size and holds up to 3 keys, suitable for most domestic properties with a front door key, a back door key and possibly a window or alarm key. The 5403E is the large size and holds up to 5 keys, designed for properties with multiple access points such as holiday lets, properties with outbuildings, or households where each family member needs their own key.
A fire and waterproof safe is independently tested to protect its contents for a specified time at a specified external temperature, and to keep water out during fire fighting or flooding. Typical ratings are 30 minutes or 60 minutes at around 843°C (the temperature range of a domestic house fire), with a separate water immersion test. Documents, passports, deeds and USB drives generally survive these ratings, but always check the specific rating on the safe against what you are storing, since cash and certain plastics need lower internal temperatures than paper.
Key locked safes are simple, reliable and need no batteries, but you have to keep the key somewhere safe or you cannot open the safe. Combination safes (mechanical dial or push button) avoid the lost key problem but need to be set with a code that is memorable yet not obvious. Digital keypad safes are quick to open and let you change the code easily, but they need batteries which can run flat. For most domestic use a digital keypad safe with a backup key (which most include) is the practical choice. For sites and contractor handover, a combination key box is usually preferred.
Most wall mounted key safes (Master Lock 5401, 5403E and 5426) and entry level domestic safes (Yale Value Safe, Master Lock Fire Chest) come with bolts and instructions for installation into masonry. You will need a hammer drill with the correct masonry bit to drill the wall, plus the appropriate wall plugs and bolts (often supplied). For Sold Secure installations or large safes the manufacturer's fitting instructions should be followed exactly, since incorrect installation can invalidate both the security rating and any insurance cover that depends on it. If you are unsure, get a locksmith to fit it.
The 5400E is a portable key lock box with a shackle that hooks over a door handle, railing or fixed point rather than being bolted to a wall. It holds up to 3 keys behind a 4 digit resettable combination. The common use case is handing over property access temporarily: a cleaner who only needs access for one visit, a contractor working over a single weekend, an Airbnb guest who only needs the key for the length of their stay. Because it is portable, it is generally not suitable for permanent installation where Sold Secure rating is required.
