Hasps, Chains & Cables

Hasps, Chains and Security Cables

Our Hasps, Chains & Cables collection brings together the secondary security hardware that backs up a padlock or safe: the hardened steel chains for securing motorbikes, plant, tools and garden equipment, the lockout tagout hasps used in factories and workshops to isolate machinery during maintenance, and the cable and chain locks for situations where flexibility matters more than maximum cut resistance. At MTN Shop UK we sell 42 products covering hasps, chains, cables and accessory shackles from Master Lock, ABUS Mechanical, Squire, BlueSpot Tools and Scan.

The chain range is built around the named hardened steel series that trade users specify by reference: Squire Y3 (90cm × 10mm square section hardened steel), Squire G4 (1.2m × 10mm high security), the ABUS 6KS and 10KS security chains in 65mm, 85mm and 110mm link lengths, and the Scan Heavy-Duty 1m × 9mm chain supplied with a matching armoured padlock. The Master Lock side of the collection is dominated by lockout tagout hasps in colour coded steel for safe isolation of energy sources during maintenance.

Pair this collection with the rest of our security range. Browse our padlocks category, our ABUS Mechanical, Squire and Yale Locks brand pages, our safes and key safes, plus the wider locks and security category.

Hasps, Chains and Cables at MTN Shop UK

A padlock is only as strong as what it is locked to. A high security padlock fitted to a thin gauge hasp, a soft mild steel chain or an unprotected staple gives no real protection against attack with bolt croppers, hacksaw or angle grinder. The role of this collection is the link between the lock and the asset: the hardened steel chains, the colour coded lockout hasps, the cable locks and the accessory shackles that complete the security setup. Trade users, site managers, fleet operators, motorcyclists and maintenance engineers come here when the question has shifted from "which lock?" to "what am I going to thread it through?".

Squire Y3 and G4 hardened steel chains

The Squire chain range carries the heritage of one of the oldest British padlock manufacturers (founded 1780) and the two most popular references in the range cover most domestic and trade security needs:

  • Squire Y3 Square Section Hardened Steel Chain 90cm × 10mm: the square section profile is harder to grip with bolt croppers than a round link, and the hardened steel resists cutting better than mild steel. Supplied with a protective sleeve to prevent paint damage on bikes, gates and equipment.
  • Squire G4 High Security Chain 1.2m × 10mm: the longer 1.2 metre length suits securing motorbikes through the rear wheel and frame to a ground anchor, or chaining plant equipment to a fixed point on site.

ABUS Mechanical 6KS and 10KS security chains

The ABUS Mechanical chain range is built around squared, hardened, case hardened steel links available in multiple link lengths to match the application:

  • ABUS 6KS: the 6mm series for moderate security needs, available in 65mm, 85mm and 110mm link lengths. Lighter to carry, suitable for bicycle security and lower value asset protection.
  • ABUS 10KS: the 10mm series for high security, paired with ABUS Granit or comparable closed shackle padlocks for motorcycles, scooters, plant and high value tool storage.

All ABUS chains come with a fabric sleeve that protects paintwork and reduces noise as the chain handles.

Scan and ready-to-use chain sets

The Scan Heavy-Duty Chain 1m × 9mm + Armoured Padlock is a packaged set covering both pieces of the security chain plus a matching armoured padlock with shoulders that protect the shackle, supplied keyed and ready to use. The right choice for a homeowner securing a garden shed, a motorhome owner securing gas bottles or wheel clamps, or any user who wants a single tested combination rather than picking chain and padlock separately.

Master Lock lockout tagout hasps

The Master Lock lockout tagout range is a separate category within this collection, designed not for theft prevention but for safe isolation of machinery during maintenance. A lockout hasp allows multiple workers to each fit their own padlock to the same energy isolation point, so the machine cannot be re-energised until every worker has removed their personal lock. Colour coded steel construction follows the standard industry convention:

  • Master Lock Lockout Standard Hasp 25mm Steel Red: the standard 25mm jaw hasp in red, sized to fit common isolation switches and valves. Each padlock hole accepts one worker's personal lock during the maintenance shift.

Lockout hasps are mandatory equipment in many industrial settings under UK and EU isolation procedures, alongside lockout padlocks, valve covers, tags and electrical isolation devices.

Choosing the right chain and security setup

  • Bicycle security: ABUS 6KS at 65mm or 85mm link length, paired with a 50mm or 60mm padlock.
  • Motorbike or scooter at home: Squire G4 1.2m × 10mm or ABUS 10KS, paired with a closed shackle padlock and threaded through a ground anchor.
  • Garden shed, gates, garden equipment: Scan Heavy-Duty 1m × 9mm with armoured padlock set, or Squire Y3 90cm × 10mm with separate padlock.
  • Plant, tools, site equipment: Squire G4 1.2m × 10mm with high security padlock.
  • Industrial machine isolation: Master Lock lockout tagout hasps with lockout padlocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

For bicycles a 6mm hardened chain (such as the ABUS 6KS) is the typical minimum. For motorbikes, scooters, plant and high value tools, 10mm hardened steel chain is generally recommended (Squire Y3, Squire G4 or ABUS 10KS). Thicker is harder to cut but also heavier to carry and harder to thread through frames and anchor points, so the right choice balances the value of the asset against practical use. Always pair the chain with a padlock of matching or higher security rating.
Both are 10mm hardened steel chains from Squire. The Y3 is the 90cm square section hardened chain, with a square link profile that is harder to grip with bolt croppers than a round profile. The G4 is the 1.2m high security version, with the extra length for securing motorbikes through the rear wheel and frame to a ground anchor, or chaining plant to a fixed point. Choose Y3 for shed and gate security, G4 for motorbike and plant security where length matters.
ABUS uses a reference code that combines the chain series with the link length. 6KS is the 6mm series and 10KS is the 10mm series. The number after the slash is the inside length of each link in millimetres: 65, 85 or 110mm. Longer links are easier to thread through wheels and frames but slightly easier to attack with bolt croppers. Shorter links are more compact but more restrictive to thread through.
A lockout tagout hasp is a steel jaw fitted to an energy isolation point on machinery (an electrical isolator switch, a valve, a circuit breaker) that holds multiple padlocks at once. During maintenance, each worker fits their own personal padlock to the hasp. The hasp cannot be removed until every padlock is removed, which means the machine cannot be re-energised while any worker is still inside or working on it. Lockout tagout is mandatory equipment in most UK and EU industrial settings under HSE isolation procedures.
The sleeve has two purposes. First, it protects the paintwork of the bike, gate or equipment that the chain is wrapped around (a bare hardened steel chain dragged across a fuel tank will scratch it). Second, it dampens the noise of the chain handling and clinking, which is both quieter in use and removes one of the audible signals that a thief would listen for. The sleeve does not affect the security of the chain itself.
In principle yes, but the shackle of the padlock must fit through the link of the chain, and ideally the padlock and chain should be matched in security rating. There is no point using a CEN 6 padlock with a soft mild steel chain, or a hardened 10mm chain with a brass padlock. Many manufacturers (Squire, ABUS, Scan) sell matched chain and padlock sets to remove this guesswork. Where you are buying separately, always check the shackle diameter against the chain link inside length.
The Scan Heavy-Duty Chain set is a packaged combination of a 1m × 9mm hardened chain with a matching armoured padlock, supplied keyed and ready to use. The armoured padlock has shoulders that protect the shackle from bolt croppers. This is a practical entry point for homeowners securing sheds, garden equipment, motorhomes, gas bottles or trailers, where buying a tested set is simpler than picking chain and lock separately.
