Tank Traps & Bases

Tank traps and bases are heavy-duty floor-standing bases used to support vertical boom poles, scaffold tubes and lighting structures without the need for bolting to the floor. Named after their distinctive cross-shaped profile, tank traps are the standard solution for securing booms in theatre, dance, live events and TV studios where a stable, freestanding base is required.

Typical applications

• Boom bases in theatre and dance — the standard base for vertical side lighting booms; additional weights can be added to the plate arms for stability
• Touring and live events — fast to set up and take down, no floor fixings required
• TV and film studios — stable, low-profile base for lighting stands and grip equipment
• Outdoor events — weighted base for structures where ground anchoring is not possible

What to look for

• Socket diameter — most Doughty tank traps accept standard 48mm scaffold tube; check compatibility with your boom pole
• Weight and footprint — heavier bases provide more stability; consider wing spread for crowded wing spaces where trip hazard is a concern
• Number of positions — some models offer multiple socket positions for different tube angles and configurations

Safety note: Always add counterweights to tank trap arms when supporting tall booms or heavy fixture loads. Unweighted bases are a tip and trip hazard, particularly in crowded wing spaces.
