Doughty Boom Arms for Stage Lighting and Live Events

Doughty boom arms are horizontal extension brackets for vertical lighting booms used in theatre, dance, live events and TV studios. A boom arm holds the lighting fixture at a set distance from the vertical pole, allowing riggers to position lanterns at the correct side lighting angle without the fixture touching the tube. All Doughty boom arms have a factory-fitted weld coupler for attachment to the boom pole and a 28mm TV spigot receiver at the fixture end. Available in aluminium and steel in multiple lengths and SWL ratings.

Boom Arm Types

  • Doughty Standard Boom Arms: aluminium construction, available in 250mm, 500mm, 750mm and 1000mm lengths. SWL varies by length: 100kg (250mm), 50kg (500mm), 37kg (750mm), 25kg (1000mm). Available in polished aluminium and black.
  • Doughty Heavy Duty Boom Arms: 1000mm length with SWL 50kg. Designed for moving heads and heavy luminaires. Available in polished and black powder coat finish.
  • Doughty Boom Arms with Brace: 1000mm aluminium boom arm with diagonal brace to eliminate flex when hanging heavy luminaires. Two articulated joints for versatile mounting. Ideal for moving heads. Available in aluminium and black.
  • Doughty Steel Boom Arms: steel construction in standard with twist and straight versions. For permanent installations where steel construction is preferred.
  • Doughty Steel Double Boom Arms: two-sided steel boom arm for mounting fixtures on both sides of a pole simultaneously. Fits 48mm to 51mm tube. SWL 12kg per side.
  • Doughty Wall Mounted Boom Arm: for mounting a boom arm directly to a wall without a vertical pole or tank trap base. For permanent venue installations.
  • Doughty Pivot Arm: an articulated pivot arm for adjusting the fixture angle without repositioning the whole boom arm.
  • Doughty Supaclamp Offset Arm: attaches via a Supaclamp for flexible positioning on bars, stands and tubes without a weld coupler connection.

Choosing the Right Boom Arm

  • Standard lanterns: the 500mm standard boom arm (SWL 50kg) is the most common choice for theatre and live events side lighting.
  • Moving heads: use the heavy duty version (SWL 50kg at 1000mm) or the braced boom arm to eliminate flex when hanging heavier luminaires.
  • Two fixtures on one pole: the steel double boom arm mounts on both sides of the pole for two fixture positions from a single boom.
  • Permanent wall installation: the wall mounted boom arm fixes directly to a wall without requiring a vertical pole or tank trap base.
  • SWL note: on standard boom arms, SWL decreases as length increases. Always check the rated load for your specific arm length before rigging.

Always use a secondary Doughty safety bond on any fixture rigged from a boom arm overhead. Browse our full range of Doughty clamps and couplers for the complete range.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Doughty boom arm is a horizontal extension bracket that attaches to a vertical lighting boom pole to hold a stage lighting fixture at a set distance from the pole. Used in theatre, dance and live events to create side lighting and cross lighting positions. All Doughty boom arms have a 28mm TV spigot receiver at the fixture end and attach to the boom pole via a factory-fitted weld coupler.
A Doughty standard boom arm is available in 250mm to 1000mm lengths with SWL ratings from 25kg to 100kg depending on length. A Doughty heavy duty boom arm is 1000mm with a higher SWL of 50kg, designed specifically for moving heads and heavier luminaires where the standard version at 1000mm would have insufficient load capacity. The braced version adds a diagonal brace to eliminate flex entirely.
Select a Doughty boom arm with a SWL that equals or exceeds the total weight of the fixture including any accessories attached to it. On standard boom arms, SWL decreases as the arm gets longer: 100kg at 250mm, 50kg at 500mm, 37kg at 750mm and 25kg at 1000mm. For heavy moving heads at 1000mm, use the heavy duty version rated to 50kg or the braced version.
