Pipe & Thread Cutters
Pipe and thread cutters covers the specialist cordless tools for cutting threaded rod (studding) and pipe cleanly and safely on site, without the sparks, thread damage and unsafe cutting edge that come from cutting rod with an angle grinder or hacksaw. This is the collection for MEP contractors, HVAC installers, sprinkler fitters, first-fix electricians, ductwork installers and suspended ceiling installers who cut threaded rod every day on site for hangers, brackets, unistrut suspension and rack installations.
The collection currently focuses on cordless 18V threaded rod cutters, the specification that has replaced the angle grinder for most first-fix suspension work on modern construction sites. Key features across the range: clean square cut with no thread damage on either side of the cut, no sparks for use in fire-sensitive environments and near flammable materials, compact one-handed operation for overhead installation work, 18V cordless platform for portable use anywhere on site, and threaded rod capacity typically up to M10 in both mild steel and stainless steel studding.
The brands here are the two trade references in the cordless threaded rod cutter segment: Makita (with the DSC102ZJ on the 18V LXT platform) and DEWALT (with the DCS350N XR on the 18V XR platform). Both are supplied as bare units for existing users of their respective battery ecosystems.

Cordless threaded rod cutters at MTN Shop UK
Cutting threaded rod is one of those jobs that looks trivial but actually reveals whether a first-fix installation has been done properly. The traditional method is an angle grinder with a thin cutting disc: fast and cheap, but it produces sparks that are unacceptable in many modern environments (fire-sprinkler zones, gas installations, ATEX areas, buildings with combustible insulation), it damages the threads on both sides of the cut so the last few millimetres of the offcut are unusable, and it leaves a sharp burr on the cut end that has to be dressed with a file before the rod can accept a nut. Cordless threaded rod cutters solve all three problems in a compact 18V tool that fits in the tool bag and cuts a clean square end with intact threads right up to the cut line.
Makita DSC102ZJ LXT Threaded Rod Cutter 18V
The Makita DSC102ZJ LXT Threaded Rod Cutter is the Makita answer on the 18V LXT platform (the most widely-adopted UK trade cordless system). Key characteristics:
- Threaded rod capacity: M6, M8 and M10 in mild steel and stainless steel studding, plus 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8" imperial rod for sites working to US specifications.
- Clean square cut: hydraulic cutting mechanism produces a clean cut with intact threads on both sides, so both the installed length and the offcut are fully usable.
- Compact profile: designed for one-handed overhead work when installing hangers and brackets above head height.
- 18V LXT battery platform: uses your existing Makita 18V batteries and chargers - the DSC102ZJ is supplied as a bare tool (Z suffix in Makita's naming = bare).
DEWALT DCS350N XR Threaded Rod Cutter 18V
The DEWALT DCS350N XR Threaded Rod Cutter is the DEWALT platform answer for users already on the 18V XR ecosystem:
- Threaded rod capacity: similar M6 to M10 range in mild steel and stainless studding, plus imperial equivalents.
- Fast cutting action: DEWALT's mechanism delivers a clean cut in a couple of seconds per rod.
- Rotating head: the cutting head rotates to give access in confined spaces where a fixed-head tool cannot reach the workpiece.
- 18V XR battery platform: compatible with all DEWALT 18V XR batteries. Supplied as a bare tool (N suffix in DEWALT's naming = naked/bare).
Threaded rod capacity: what M sizes mean
Threaded rod (also called studding) is specified by the metric M number, which corresponds to the nominal outside diameter of the thread in millimetres:
- M6: 6mm diameter, used for light hangers, small bracket suspension, cable tray hanging in commercial installations.
- M8: 8mm diameter, the most common size for general first-fix suspension work in the UK - HVAC ductwork hangers, sprinkler pipe brackets, general mechanical suspension, medium cable tray runs.
- M10: 10mm diameter, used for heavier suspension work - large ductwork, heavier pipe runs, structural brackets, plant equipment mounting, larger unistrut installations.
- M12 and larger: heavy structural suspension, requires more powerful cutting tools (typically not covered by 18V cordless format - larger threaded rod is usually cut with dedicated bench cutters or angle grinders in controlled environments).
Both the Makita DSC102ZJ and DEWALT DCS350N cover the M6 to M10 range that accounts for the majority of first-fix suspension work on UK commercial sites.
Why cordless threaded rod cutters replaced angle grinders
- No sparks: the cutting action is mechanical/hydraulic rather than abrasive, so no sparks are produced. This matters in fire-sprinkler zones (where sparks trigger sensor systems), in gas installations, in ATEX-classified areas, and in buildings with combustible insulation or dusty environments where a spark could cause fire or explosion.
- Clean cut with intact threads: the threads remain undamaged right up to the cut line on both sides. This means the offcut can be used elsewhere without wastage, and the installed length accepts a nut and washer immediately without thread dressing.
- No cutting disc replacement: angle grinder discs wear out and need constant replacement; the cordless rod cutter has a hardened cutting mechanism that lasts thousands of cuts.
- Safer overhead work: the compact one-handed operation and no sparks make overhead cutting significantly safer than an angle grinder above head height.
- Silent-ish operation: significantly quieter than an angle grinder, better for occupied buildings and noise-controlled environments.
Common applications
- HVAC ductwork suspension: M8 or M10 threaded rod hangers from ceiling anchors to support supply and extract ducting through commercial buildings.
- Sprinkler pipe installation: M8 hangers for wet and dry sprinkler pipework in accordance with BS EN 12845.
- Cable tray suspension: M6 or M8 studding for medium and heavy cable tray runs.
- Unistrut and channel installation: threaded rod suspension for unistrut frames supporting multiple services.
- Suspended ceiling grid: M6 studding for T-bar grid systems in commercial ceilings.
- Server rack installation: threaded rod bracing for 19-inch rack mounting in server rooms and comms cabinets.
- Plant and equipment suspension: heavier M10 studding for suspended plant items (small AHUs, fan coil units, water heaters).
- Structural anchors and hangers: anywhere fasteners need to hang from concrete or steel structure.
Battery platform: match to your existing kit
Both cordless threaded rod cutters are supplied as bare units, so choose the platform that matches your existing 18V tools. The Makita 18V LXT platform is the most widely-adopted UK trade cordless system, compatible with the wider range of Makita 18V drills, drivers, saws and site tools. The DEWALT 18V XR platform is the DEWALT professional cordless system, compatible with all DEWALT 18V XR tools including the wider XR Brushless range. For sites already committed to one platform, matching the rod cutter to that platform saves on battery and charger inventory. For users new to cordless, the choice is more about the wider platform ecosystem than the rod cutter specifically.
Cordless rod cutter vs bench rod cutter vs angle grinder
- Cordless 18V rod cutter (this collection): portable, one-handed, no sparks, up to M10. Right for on-site first-fix installation work.
- Bench threaded rod cutter: stationary workshop tool, higher capacity (up to M20+), for pre-cutting rod lengths in the workshop before delivery to site.
- Angle grinder + thin cutting disc: the traditional method, still valid where sparks are not a problem and thread damage does not matter. Fast for occasional cutting.
- Hacksaw: the fallback method when no power tool is available; slow but produces a clean cut with correct technique.
Safety and standards
- PUWER 1998 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) applies: the tool must be maintained and used by trained users.
- PPE: safety glasses for eye protection from small metal fragments, safety gloves for handling cut rod (the ends can still have small burrs), safety boots for foot protection from dropped rod, and safety helmet for overhead installation work.
- Support the rod correctly: the offcut end can fall unpredictably during the cut. Hold the offcut with a spare hand or ensure it drops onto a safe surface.
- Correct rod material rating: check the cutter capacity matches the material - stainless steel is harder to cut than mild steel and may reduce the effective capacity of the tool.
- Battery care: the cutting action draws significant current from the battery. Keep spare batteries charged for extended runs.
- PAT testing: battery chargers and any corded workshop equipment should be PAT tested per the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 for commercial use.
Choosing between the Makita and DEWALT
- Existing Makita 18V LXT user: Makita DSC102ZJ (uses your existing Makita batteries and chargers).
- Existing DEWALT 18V XR user: DEWALT DCS350N (uses your existing DEWALT XR batteries and chargers).
- New to cordless: match to the platform you plan to build the wider kit on. Consider what other tools you use daily (drill, impact driver, jigsaw, circular saw) and choose the rod cutter to match that platform for battery interchangeability.
- Multi-brand tool user: either brand works well; the cutting mechanism and capacity are broadly equivalent. Consider stock availability with your regular merchant.
