Secateurs
Discover our range of secateurs from Bahco, Fiskars, Kent & Stowe, Faithfull and Bulldog, covering bypass, anvil and ratchet pruners for cutting stems, branches and dead wood in the garden.
Choosing the right secateur comes down to cutting action and hand size as much as brand. Bypass secateurs give the cleanest cut on live growth, anvil secateurs handle thicker or dead wood, and ratchet models reduce the hand strength needed for tougher cuts.

Secateurs – Product list
Bypass secateurs for clean cuts on live growth
Bypass secateurs use two curved blades that pass by each other like scissors, giving a clean, precise cut that minimises damage to the plant, the standard choice for pruning live stems and branches. The range covers everything from the Kent & Stowe Traditional Bypass Secateurs through to Fiskars' PowerGear range, such as the P921 X-series and P961 X-series, which use a rolling-joint mechanism to multiply cutting force on thicker stems.
Anvil secateurs for dead wood and thicker stems
Anvil secateurs use a single sharp blade that closes onto a flat surface, or anvil, giving more crushing power suited to dead or woody stems that bypass blades would struggle with. The Faithfull Countryman Anvil Secateurs and Fiskars P941 X-series Anvil Pruner suit this heavier cutting work, though anvil secateurs are generally less precise on live, delicate growth than a bypass equivalent.
Ratchet secateurs for reduced hand strain
Ratchet secateurs, such as the Kent & Stowe SureCut Hardwood Anvil Ratchet Secateurs and Bulldog Premier Ratchet Pruning Shear, cut in stages rather than one squeeze, reducing the hand strength needed for thicker or tougher stems, useful for anyone with limited grip strength or facing an extended pruning session.
Ergonomic and rotating handle secateurs
Bahco's ERGO range, including the PX-M2 in small, medium and large handle sizes, and the PXR-M2 with rotating handle, is built to reduce hand and wrist strain during repeated use, with the rotating handle in particular following the natural motion of the hand through each cut. A left-handed model is also available for left-handed gardeners who find standard secateurs awkward to use.
Snips for detail and flower work
For lighter tasks like deadheading, herb cutting and flower arranging, snips such as the Kent & Stowe Garden Life Flower Snips and Fiskars Solid SP220 Herb Snips give finer control than a standard secateur, better suited to precise, small-scale cutting than woody stems.
Choosing the right capacity
Most secateurs state a maximum cutting capacity, typically 15-25mm depending on the model. Exceeding this capacity risks damaging the blade or straining the mechanism, so match the secateur's rated capacity to the thickest stems you expect to cut regularly.
