Paints and wood finishes explained
Getting a durable finish comes down to matching the paint to the surface and preparing it properly. The range at MTN Shop UK covers metal, timber and decorated surfaces, indoors and out, from brands such as Hammerite, Rustins and Blackfriar, in tins from 250ml for small jobs up to 5 litres for larger areas.
Metal paints and rust treatments
Direct-to-rust metal paints, such as Hammerite in smooth and hammered finishes, can be applied straight onto rusted metal without a separate primer, which makes them well suited to railings, gates, gutters and structural steel. For badly corroded surfaces, a rust treatment or converter stabilises the metal before topcoating. Quick-drying enamels, for example the Rustins satin black in 250ml, suit smaller items and touch-ups.
Decorating paints, primers and undercoats
For walls, ceilings and interior woodwork, decorating paints are used over the right primer or undercoat. Bare timber, new plaster and bare metal each need an appropriate primer so the topcoat bonds and covers evenly. Skipping this step is the usual cause of peeling and patchy coverage, so the primer or undercoat is as important as the finish coat.
Varnishes, wood oils, stains and preservers
Timber has its own set of finishes. Wood preservers, such as the Rustins Advanced Wood Preserver in 5 litre, protect against rot and insect attack and go on before a decorative finish. Wood stains and dyes colour the timber, while varnishes and oils seal and protect it. For outdoor and marine use, an exterior or yacht varnish, for example the Rustins Yacht Varnish Gloss in 5 litre, is formulated to flex and resist weather and water.
Solvents, thinners and surface prep
Solvent-based paints are thinned and cleaned up with white spirit, while methylated spirit is used for cleaning and for shellac-based products. Good preparation, filling, sanding and a clean, dry surface, matters more than any single product. Coverage and recoat times vary by product and are printed on each tin, so check these before estimating quantities.
Choosing the right paint
Start with the surface. For bare or rusty metal, choose a direct-to-rust metal paint. For interior walls and woodwork, pair a decorating paint with the correct primer or undercoat. For exterior timber, treat with a preserver first, then apply a stain, oil or exterior varnish. Decide between water-based, for low odour and quick drying, and solvent-based, for hard-wearing durability, then match the tin size to the area.
