Professional nailers at MTN Shop UK

A dedicated professional nailer is the tool that separates a trade carpenter from a DIY user. General-purpose staple guns and combi tools cover basic fastening, but real trade work - first-fix framing at production speed, finish trim that goes up without hammer marks or split timber, roofing at 200 nails a minute, concrete block installation, metal joist hanger fixing - requires nailers that are engineered specifically for the fastener type and the work. The Nailers collection at MTN Shop UK covers the full professional range with 45+ trade-grade tools across nine brands, from ultra-fine 23-gauge pinners to first-fix gas framing nailers and specialist palm nailers.

Nailer gauges: which one for what work

Nail gauge (the wire thickness of the nail) determines the head size, the strength of the fixing, and the visibility of the finished work. UK trade practice:

  • 23-gauge headless pinner: the finest nail, no head (or very tiny), used for delicate glazing beads, decorative moulding, veneer edge fixing, small trim where any visible head would spoil the finish. The Bostitch TU-216-2330K-E Pneumatic Headless Pinner is the reference for this specialist work.
  • 18-gauge brad nailer: the standard fine brad for delicate trim - beading, dado rail, small mouldings, cabinet backing, glazing rail. Nails 15mm to 50mm typical. DEWALT DCN680N (cordless), DCN680N Brushless, Makita DFN350ZJ (cordless), plus DEWALT DPN1850PP and Tacwise DGN50V pneumatic options.
  • 16-gauge finish nailer (straight): the workhorse trim nail for skirting, architrave, doorframes, hardwood mouldings and general second-fix finish work. Straight magazine. Bosch GNH18V-64-2M BL (cordless), DEWALT DCN662N (cordless), DEWALT DPN1664PP (pneumatic), Bostitch FN1664-E (pneumatic magnesium body).
  • 15-gauge angled finish nailer: the heavier finish nail with angled magazine for door frame installation, structural trim, thicker joinery. The angled magazine reaches into corners a straight nailer cannot. DEWALT DCN660P2/DCN660N/DCN660D2 cordless XR Brushless Second Fix.
  • First fix framing nail (round head or clipped head): the structural nail for stud framing, floor decking, roof carcassing, wall plates and general structural timber. Common systems: 30° paper collated, 33° paper tape, 34° clipped head. Higher gauge (11-gauge typical), longer length (50mm to 90mm typical).
  • Roofing coil nail (short, heavy head): specific to felt shingle roofing installation, coil-collated for high-volume firing. Reduced length (19-45mm) with wider head to grip the roofing material.
  • Metal connecting nail (positive placement): specialist short-length square-head nails for joist hangers, framing anchors and metal connectors where the nail must fit specific pre-punched holes. Bostitch MCN150-E Strap Shot Metal Connecting Nailer is the reference.
  • Concrete/masonry nail: heavy hardened nails for fixing timber battens, plates and mounts directly into concrete or masonry without pre-drilling. DEWALT DCN890P2 Concrete Nailer and Bostitch SB-HC50FN Concrete Block Nailer.

Power source: cordless vs gas vs pneumatic

The three power sources each have different strengths for different work:

Pneumatic (compressor-driven)

The traditional professional format: compressor plus air hose plus nailer. Fastest firing rate of any format, longest tool service life, sustained power without battery management. Right for: workshops with permanent compressor setup, roofing crews with mobile compressors, production framing crews, upholstery workshops. Brands specifically pneumatic in this collection: Bostitch (the widest specialist range including F33 PTSM 33° Paper Tape Framing, F21PL-E Roundhead & MCN Stick 38-90mm, N66C-2-E Coil Nailer, FN1664-E Magnesium Finish, PN50-E Palm Nailer), Tacwise (DGN50V Pneumatic 18 Gauge Brad, DFN50V Pneumatic Finish), Rapid (Airtac Pro PB161 Angled Brad, PB131 Pneumatic Nailer), Senco (Finish Pro 18 Kit with 1HP Compressor 110V), and the DEWALT DPN pneumatic range.

Cordless 18V battery

The modern professional format for site work: no compressor, no air hose, no fuel cells to buy. Batteries deliver several hundred nails per charge with modern brushless motors. Right for: site work without compressor access, refurbishment in occupied buildings, contractors working across multiple sites, roofing crews wanting portability. Key models: DEWALT XR Brushless (DCN680N 18g Brad, DCN662N 16Ga Second Fix, DCN660P2/N/D2 15g Second Fix, DCN45RNN/RND2 Roofing Coil, DCN930P2/N Framing), Bosch GNH18V-64-2M BL Professional 16ga Finish, Makita DFN350ZJ LXT 18G Brad, Einhell FIXETTO 18/50 N Power X-Change.

Gas cordless (fuel cell + battery)

The Paslode-invented format that dominates UK first-fix framing: small battery for spark ignition, disposable fuel cell for combustion power, nail-collated magazine. Maximum firing power in the smallest tool format, no compressor, no long charging time. The dominant format for UK first-fix housebuilding, framing crews, roofing crews and structural carpentry. Key gas nailers: Paslode IM350+ 1st Fix Gas Framing Nailer, Paslode 360Xi Framing 7.4V, Paslode PPNXi Positive Placement 7.4V, Paslode IM45 GN Lithium Multipurpose Coil 7.4V, Makita GN900SE First Fix Gas 7.4V, Makita GF600SE 2nd Fix Gas 15-64mm 7.4V.

First fix vs second fix nailers

  • First fix nailers: the structural framing tools for the carcass of the building. Framing nails 50-90mm long, roundhead or clipped head, 11-gauge typical. Used for stud partition walls, floor decking, roof carcassing, wall plates, joists, noggins, sole plates. The typical UK first-fix specification is a Paslode IM350+ gas framing nailer or a DEWALT DCN930 XR cordless framing nailer.
  • Second fix nailers: the finish trim tools for visible work after plastering. Brad nails and finish nails 15-64mm long, 15-, 16- or 18-gauge, small head that can be filled and painted over. Used for skirting boards, architrave, dado rail, panel moulding, beading, cabinet installation. The typical UK second-fix specification is a DEWALT DCN660/DCN662 XR cordless second fix nailer or a Paslode 16ga gas finish nailer.

Specialist nailers

Positive placement / concrete nailers

Positive placement nailers are specialist first-fix tools for fixing timber battens, plates and connectors directly to concrete, block, or masonry without pre-drilling. The nail is hardened and driven at very high power, penetrating the concrete without pilot holes. Used extensively in commercial fit-out for stud partitions on concrete floors, ceiling battens on concrete slabs, and structural connection work. Paslode PPNXi Positive Placement 7.4V (gas cordless), DEWALT DCN890P2 XR Brushless Concrete Nailer 18V, and Bostitch SB-HC50FN Pneumatic Concrete Block Nailer.

Coil nailers

Coil nailers use nails collated in a coil rather than a stick strip, giving much higher magazine capacity (hundreds of nails per load vs. dozens for stick-collated) for high-volume production work. Used for pallet manufacturing, fencing crews, roofing coil work, and any application where reload frequency is a bottleneck. Bostitch N66C-2-E Pneumatic Coil Nailer, Paslode IM45 GN Lithium Multipurpose Coil Nailer.

Roofing coil nailers

Specifically for felt shingle roofing installation - short-length coil-collated nails with wide heads, high firing rate for large roof areas. DEWALT DCN45RNN Bare Unit and DCN45RND2 Kit with 2x2.0Ah, both XR Brushless 18V cordless.

Metal connecting nailers

Specialist tools for fixing joist hangers, framing anchors, hurricane ties and other pre-punched metal connectors used in modern timber frame construction. The nails are short and specific to the connector plate hole size. Bostitch MCN150-E Strap Shot Metal Connecting Nailer 38mm is the reference.

Palm nailers

Compact palm-held nailers for driving nails in confined spaces where a full-size nailer cannot fit - toe-nailing, awkward joist ends, tight corners of framing, hurricane tie installation. Bostitch PN50-E Pneumatic Compact Palm Nailer is the reference specification.

Fuel cells and gas nailer maintenance

Gas nailers (Paslode, Makita GN/GF range) use disposable fuel cells that ignite to drive each nail. Fuel cells last around 1,000 to 1,200 nails per cell in normal use and are consumables that must be stocked alongside nail supply. Gas nailers also require periodic cleaning of the combustion chamber, spark plug and drive mechanism to maintain reliable firing - typically every 30,000 to 50,000 nails depending on the model. Paslode publishes recommended service intervals for each model. Running a gas nailer without cleaning or with an old fuel cell leads to misfires, incomplete firings and eventually mechanism damage.

Safety

  • Contact safety trigger: all modern nailers include a contact safety trigger that prevents accidental discharge when the tool is not pressed against a workpiece. Do not defeat this feature under any circumstances - accidental discharge is a leading cause of serious injury with nail guns.
  • Sequential trigger vs bump fire: sequential firing (press contact, then pull trigger separately) is safer than bump fire (hold trigger, bump contact for repeat fires). Bump fire is faster on production framing but requires much more operator discipline.
  • Eye protection: always wear safety glasses - nail deflections, splintering wood and misfires are all eye hazards.
  • Never fire toward yourself or others: keep the tool nose oriented at the workpiece; a misfire, over-fire or nail penetration can send fasteners beyond the workpiece.
  • Disconnect power/air/gas before jam clearance: disconnect the battery, unplug the mains, disconnect the air line, or remove the fuel cell before opening the magazine to clear a jam.
  • Know what is behind the workpiece: for wall and floor fastening, understand what services are behind the timber - cables, pipes, joist edges and electrical conduits are all vulnerable to over-driven fasteners.
  • Gas nailer ventilation: gas nailers produce combustion exhaust - use in well-ventilated areas, avoid confined spaces for extended firing.
  • Fuel cell storage: fuel cells contain flammable liquefied gas and must be stored per COSHH requirements - away from heat sources, in ventilated storage, not in vehicles in hot weather.
  • PPE: hearing protection for continuous pneumatic use, safety gloves for handling nails and workpieces, safety boots for site work, safety helmets for construction sites.
  • PAT testing: corded electric compressors and battery chargers should be PAT tested per the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 for commercial use.
