Spray Paints & Aerosols – Product list

Spray Paints and Aerosols at MTN Shop UK

Aerosol paint is the practical choice when a brush is impractical: small project work, complex shapes that need even coverage in awkward corners, furniture upcycling, motorcycle tank refinishing and car bodywork touch-up, craft and decorative work, signage and line marking, woodturning finishes and the rescue of items that would be expensive or fiddly to dismantle for brush application. The 273 products in this collection cover the full range from PlastiKote and MOTIP®, the two brands that UK trade users, decorators, classic car restorers, furniture refinishers and committed DIY users specify by name for aerosol work.

PlastiKote: the spray paint specialist (237 products)

PlastiKote is the long established US spray paint brand with the widest range in the collection. The product lines are organised by use case:

  • PlastiKote Twist & Spray: the flagship range with a twist trigger that gives finer control than a standard button, in Gloss, Satin and Matt finishes across a full colour palette including Twist & Spray Gloss White, Gloss Yellow, Satin Black and dozens of other shades. The standard reference for furniture upcycling and craft work.
  • PlastiKote Trade range: the professional specification including the PlastiKote Trade Anti-Slip Spray Paint 400ml (with grit additive for steps, ramps and wet decking surfaces) and the PlastiKote Trade Quick Dry Clear Lacquer Spray Satin 400ml (protective top coat over coloured paint).
  • PlastiKote Super Spray: the high coverage aerosol range, including the PlastiKote Matt Super Spray Black 400ml (one of the bestsellers in the matt range).
  • PlastiKote Twist & Spray Woodstove Paint Black 400ml: the high temperature finish formulated specifically for log burners, wood stoves, fireplace surrounds and BBQ work where standard paint would burn off.
  • PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer: the aerosol primer in Grey and White, the preparation coat for craft, furniture and car bodywork.

MOTIP®: the European professional aerosol range (36 products)

MOTIP® is the professional European aerosol brand, widely specified for automotive refinishing, motorcycle work, industrial maintenance and trade applications. The range includes RAL coded standard colours for industrial colour matching, aerosol primers, clear lacquers, zinc spray for galvanising touch-up, brake cleaner, copper grease and the high temperature engine and exhaust paints that automotive trade users specify. Where PlastiKote covers the craft and decorative end of the market, MOTIP® is closer to the trade and industrial specification.

What aerosol paint is for

Aerosol paint is the right tool for several specific job types:

  • Furniture upcycling: chairs, side tables, picture frames, planters, mirror frames where smooth even coverage matters and brush marks would spoil the finish.
  • Car and motorcycle bodywork touch-up: scratch repair, panel refinishing, wheel rims, exhaust heat shields, engine bay components.
  • Complex shapes: wrought iron furniture, wire baskets, mesh, ornamental ironwork, decorative castings where a brush cannot get into the corners.
  • Craft and decorative work: stencilling, signage, props, model making, school and art projects.
  • High temperature applications: log burners, wood stoves, BBQ, exhaust manifolds, radiators.
  • Anti-slip surfaces: steps, ramps, ladders, decking, ladder rungs (PlastiKote Trade Anti-Slip).
  • Protective lacquer over coloured paint: sealing and protecting decorative finishes (PlastiKote Trade Quick Dry Clear Lacquer).

How to spray paint properly

Aerosol failure (runs, drips, orange peel texture, patchy coverage, peeling) is almost always down to application technique rather than the paint itself. The key points:

  • Surface preparation: clean, dry, grease free, lightly sanded. Use a degreaser on metal, sand glossy paint to give a key.
  • Prime first on bare substrates: bare wood, bare metal, plastic, polystyrene all need the right primer (PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer covers most).
  • Shake the can for 2 minutes with the ball rattling clearly before starting.
  • Hold 25-30cm from the surface: closer and you get runs, further and you get orange peel and patchy coverage.
  • Multiple light coats not one heavy coat: two or three thin coats with 5-10 minutes between gives a much better finish than one wet coat.
  • Spray in even passes: start the spray before the object, finish after, no stopping in the middle.
  • Temperature matters: aerosol paint does not work well below 10°C or above 30°C, and humidity over 80% causes blooming.
  • Invert and clear the nozzle: after each use, hold the can upside down and spray until clear gas comes out, to stop the nozzle blocking.

Safety and ventilation

Aerosol paint propellants and solvents are flammable and contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that should not be inhaled. Always spray outdoors or in a well ventilated area, wear a respirator or at minimum a dust mask rated for organic vapours, and use eye protection to prevent overspray reaching the eyes. Keep aerosol cans away from ignition sources, do not pierce or burn empty cans, and store below 50°C. Disposable nitrile gloves are advisable to protect the hands from paint and solvent contact.
