Routers

We sell routers from Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, HiKOKI and Einhell, covering 1/4in and 1/2in plunge, fixed base and palm router configurations in corded and cordless designs.

A router cuts grooves, edge profiles, rebates and joints using interchangeable cutter bits, making it one of the most versatile tools in a woodworking shop. Router size and base type determine what the tool can do: collet size sets which bits fit, and base type, plunge, fixed or palm, determines how the cut is controlled and how deep it can go.

Routers – Product list

Collet size: 1/4in vs 1/2in

1/4in routers, such as the Makita RP0900X and DeWalt D26204K, take smaller diameter bits and generally run lighter, suited to trim work, edge profiles and general joinery. 1/2in routers, including the DeWalt DWE625KT and HiKOKI M12V2/J1, take larger bits and handle deeper, heavier cuts, better suited to structural joinery and larger profile work where a 1/4in collet's bit range would limit the job.

Plunge vs fixed base routers

A plunge router lowers the cutter into the workpiece from above, controlled during the cut, making it suited to internal cuts, mortises and stopped grooves where the bit needs to enter mid-surface. A fixed base router sets cutting depth before starting and holds it steady throughout the pass, giving more stability for edge profiling and consistent-depth work. Combi models like the DeWalt D26204K switch between both bases on the same motor unit, covering both cut types without buying two separate tools.

Palm routers and trimmers

Palm routers, including the Bosch GKF 600 and Makita DRT50ZJ, are compact, one-handed tools for trimming laminate edges, light detail work and tasks where a full-size router's bulk would get in the way. HiKOKI's M1808DAJPZ 1/4in Trimmer follows the same compact format, suited to precise edge and detail trimming.

Corded vs cordless

Corded routers give continuous power and typically higher wattage for demanding cuts, common on larger 1/2in plunge models. Cordless 18V and 40V options, including Makita's XGT range, Bosch's GKF 18V-8 and Einhell's TP-RO 18 line, trade some power for mobility, useful for on-site work or moving between benches without a trailing cable.

Standards and compliance

Routers sold here comply with IEC 62841, the international safety standard for hand-held power tools, and carry CE and UKCA marking confirming they meet the relevant EU and UK safety requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

The collet size determines which bit diameters fit the tool. 1/4in routers take smaller bits and suit lighter trim and edge work, while 1/2in routers take larger bits and handle deeper, heavier cuts for structural joinery and bigger profiles.
A plunge router lowers the bit into the workpiece mid-cut, suited to internal cuts, mortises and stopped grooves. A fixed base router holds a set depth throughout the pass, giving more stability for edge profiling. Combi models offer both bases on one motor.
A palm router is a compact, one-handed tool built for trimming laminate edges, light detail work and tasks where a full-size router would be too bulky to control precisely.
A corded router gives continuous power and typically higher output, better suited to demanding cuts on larger stock. A cordless router trades some power for mobility, useful for on-site work or moving between benches without a cable.
Most cordless routers in this range are sold as bare units without a battery or charger, so check you have a compatible battery from the same brand and voltage platform before ordering.
