Doughty Spigots Explained: Female Threads, Adapters and the 16mm Standard

From the 16mm Aluminium Solo Spigot with M8 and M10 threads to the Stand Adaptor, this guide explains every Doughty spigot, its exact specs, and when to use each one.

Doughty Spigots Explained: Female Threads, Adapters and the 16mm Standard

Spigots are one of the most overlooked components in a lighting rig: you only notice them when you have the wrong one. A 16mm spigot with an M10 thread when your fixture takes M8, or a stand with a 29mm receiver when your accessory expects 16mm, can stop a rig in its tracks.

Doughty Engineering makes two main types of spigots that solve the most common compatibility problems in stage, studio and broadcast rigging. This guide explains what each one is, its exact specifications, and which to order for your setup. Both are available at MTN Shop.

What is a Spigot in Entertainment Rigging?

A spigot is a short cylindrical connector used to mount equipment onto a stand, bar, or rigging point. In entertainment rigging, 16mm has become the international standard diameter for lighting and production accessories, meaning most professional fixtures and accessories are designed to accept or fit a 16mm spigot.

Spigots come in two basic forms. A male spigot is a pin that inserts into a receiver. A female spigot is a receiver that accepts a male pin. Confusion between the two is the most common source of compatibility problems on set and on stage.

Common applications include attaching stage lighting fixtures to lighting bars, mounting accessories such as barn doors and gel frames to fixtures, connecting camera accessories to light stands, and adapting between different stand and bar diameters in studio and broadcast environments.

M8 or M10? Why the Thread Matters

Doughty's 16mm Solo Spigot is sold as two separate versions: one with an M8 female thread, one with an M10 female thread. They are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one is the single most common ordering mistake with this product.

M8 and M10 refer to the diameter of the bolt thread in millimetres. M8 (8mm) is common on smaller, lighter fixtures, particularly in broadcast and studio applications. M10 (10mm) is more common on heavier stage lighting fixtures. Always check your fixture's mounting specification before ordering. The two versions are not sold as a combined part.

The Doughty Spigot Range

Two products cover almost every spigot compatibility issue you'll run into: the 16mm Aluminium Solo Spigot for threaded fixture mounts, and the Stand Adaptor for bridging between stand diameters.

Doughty 16mm Aluminium Solo Spigots (M8 and M10)

Made from AW6082 T6 aluminium, a high-strength alloy used in aerospace and structural applications, this spigot weighs just 0.04kg, light enough to use on any rig without adding meaningful load. It has a 60mm total height, 44mm body and 25mm thread depth.

The female thread is recessed into the body, allowing a fixture or accessory to bolt directly on. This is the spigot you need when your bar or stand has a 16mm male pin and your fixture bolts on via a threaded mount.

Available as SKU T73370 (M8) or T73380 (M10). Best for stage lighting fixtures, gel frames and flag frames, the Doughty Pivot Arm, and broadcast studio lighting.

Doughty Stand Adaptor (29mm to 16mm)

Doughty Stand Adaptor (29mm to 16mm)

Part No. G1189, this stainless steel adaptor is a dual-purpose component designed to bridge the gap between heavy-duty stands and standard studio accessories. It acts as a universal solution, enabling a 29mm receiver to accept a 16mm spigot, or a 16mm receiver to adapt seamlessly to a 28mm spigot.

Whether you are dealing with Euro-standard 28mm rigging or US-style 29mm (1-1/8" Junior Pin) lighting stands, this precision-made grip adaptor ensures your 16mm entertainment fixtures will mount safely without wobbling.

Best for: broadcast and studio setups, film production, photography studios mixing entertainment fixtures, and touring kits that encounter both 28mm and 29mm stand standards.

  • How to Choose the Right Doughty SpigotMatch your setup against the three questions below before you order.
What diameter is your stand or bar?If it's 16mm, the Solo Spigot fits straight on. If it's 28mm and you need to run 16mm accessories off it, that's what the Stand Adaptor bridges.
What thread does your fixture use?Check the mounting point on the fixture itself, usually stamped as M8 or M10. The two Solo Spigot versions aren't interchangeable, so confirm this before ordering rather than guessing.
Are you in a fixed venue or touring? On tour, it's worth keeping a Stand Adaptor in the kit bag regardless, since not every venue runs 16mm. For a fixed install, just order the Solo Spigot thread that matches your rig.

How to Fit and Rig Doughty Spigots Safely

Spigots may be small, but they carry the full load of whatever is attached to them. Before fitting, always check that thread engagement is complete. A partially engaged bolt under load can strip the thread or pull free. Use the correct bolt length: too short and the thread won't engage properly; too long and the bolt bottoms out before clamping the fixture.
On any suspended fixture, always fit a safety bond as secondary retention. The spigot is the primary fixing; the safety bond is what catches the fixture if the primary fixing fails. For most fixtures attached via a spigot, a 15kg bond is the appropriate choice.

Building a Complete, Compatible Rig

Getting the spigot right is a small decision with a big consequence: the wrong thread or diameter means a fixture that simply won't mount. Match your stand diameter and fixture thread using the reference table above, keep both Solo Spigot versions on hand if you work across multiple fixture types, and always pair a suspended fixture with a safety bond as secondary retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

M8 and M10 refer to the metric thread diameter. M8 means the bolt thread is 8mm in diameter; M10 means 10mm. M8 is common on smaller broadcast fixtures, M10 on heavier stage fixtures. The two are sold as separate versions of the Doughty Solo Spigot, so check your fixture before ordering.
16mm is the entertainment industry standard, used on the vast majority of professional stage, studio and broadcast lighting accessories. 29mm is the standard used on photography and film light stands. The Doughty Stand Adaptor bridges the two, letting a 29mm stand accept 16mm accessories.
Most professional entertainment fixtures use the 16mm standard with an M8 or M10 thread mount, so the Solo Spigot is compatible with the majority of stage and studio fixtures. Always check your fixture's mounting specification before ordering. Non-standard mounts may require the Stand Adaptor instead.
It converts between mounting diameters. The most common use is adapting a 29mm photography or film stand to accept 16mm entertainment accessories. It's also useful on tour, where different venues may use different bar or stand standards.
Check the mounting point on your fixture or accessory; most manufacturers specify the thread size in their documentation. If you can't find it, M8 and M10 are the two most common sizes in professional entertainment lighting, but the Solo Spigot is sold as one or the other, not both, so confirm before ordering.
