Pantographs

Pantographs are spring-balanced suspension systems used in film and TV studios to allow simple, precise height adjustment of lighting fixtures from an overhead bar or ceiling rail. Using a spring system, the pantograph can be balanced so that a light touch can readjust the height of the load through a series of connected diagonals that compress or extend to raise and lower the fixture. They keep studio floors clear of stands and cables, making them a standard solution in broadcast, photography and film studio environments.

How pantographs work

A pantograph mounts to an overhead bar or studio rail via a 28mm TV spigot at the top. The spring mechanism counterbalances the weight of the fixture below, allowing the height to be adjusted by hand and locked off at the desired position. The bottom receiver accepts the lighting fixture via a spigot or bolt connection.

What to look for

  • SWL — Doughty pantographs are available rated at 12kg, 20kg, 27kg and 36kg; always match the rating to the fixture weight including any accessories
  • Drop distance — available in 2.2m, 3m, 4m and 5m drop lengths to suit different ceiling heights and studio configurations
  • Top connection — standard 28mm TV spigot top fits Doughty barrel socket clamps, TV quick clamps and studio rail receivers
  • Bottom receiver — three-point receiver with sword pin allows 360° rotation and locks off securely; compatible with 28mm spigot, M12 bolt hole and half coupler fixing

Typical applications

  • Broadcast and TV studios — permanent ceiling-mounted lighting rigs with adjustable drop for varying set heights
  • Photography studios — overhead key and fill lights on studio rail systems, keeping the floor clear
  • Film studio stages — flexible height control for practicals and fill lights on fixed grid systems

Also available: barrel trolleys for moving fixtures along studio rails without lowering them to floor level.
