Aluminium oxide flap discs
Aluminium oxide is the standard abrasive choice for general metal grinding and finishing work. The Faithfull Aluminium Oxide Flap Disc 125mm 80 Grit (3 Pack) and matching 40 Grit and 120 Grit versions cover coarse stock removal through to finer finishing, also available in a Mixed Grit 3 Pack for varied tasks without buying each grit separately. The 115mm size covers the same grit range for smaller angle grinders.
Zirconia abrasive flap discs
Zirconia abrasive cuts faster and lasts longer than aluminium oxide on harder metals, making it the better choice for heavier stock removal. Faithfull's Zirconia Abrasive Jumbo Flap Disc range, in 40 Grit, 80 Grit and 120 Grit, is available at both 125mm and 115mm diameters, individually or in 3-packs, giving flexibility for high-volume grinding work.
Garryson flap wheels and industrial discs
For finishing work needing a curved profile rather than a flat disc, Garryson's flap wheel range spans 50mm, 60mm, 80mm and 100mm sizes, each in coarse, medium and fine grades, suited to blending welds and shaping curved or contoured surfaces a flat disc can't reach cleanly. Garryson's Industrial Zirconium Flap Disc range extends up to 180mm for larger angle grinders and heavier-duty industrial grinding, while the DIY Zirconium range covers 100mm and 115mm sizes for lighter, general-purpose use.
DEWALT and Flexovit flap discs
The DEWALT Extreme range, including the 115mm and DT30612 125mm 60G and DT30602 125mm 40G, gives a durable option for regular site use. Flexovit's Flap Disc range covers 125mm 80G, 125mm 40G and 115mm 40G, giving further options at different price points for standard angle grinder work.
Choosing the right grit
Lower grit numbers (40 grit) remove material faster and suit rough stock removal or heavy rust and paint stripping. Higher grit numbers (80-120 grit) leave a smoother finish, better suited to blending welds or preparing a surface before painting. Coarse, medium and fine grades on flap wheels follow the same principle for curved surface work.
Matching disc diameter to your angle grinder
Flap discs are sized to match specific angle grinder capacities: 100-115mm suits compact grinders, 125mm is the most common size for standard angle grinders, and 180mm suits larger, heavier-duty grinders. Always check your grinder's maximum disc diameter and arbor size (typically 22mm or 22.2mm) before ordering.
