Axes & Splitting
Our Axes & Splitting range covers felling axes, splitting mauls, hatchets and pick axes from Roughneck, Fiskars, Bahco, Estwing, Hultafors, Faithfull, Bulldog and Kent & Stowe. Whether you're processing firewood, felling small trees, or breaking ground with a pick or mattock, this collection is organised by task, so you can match the tool to the job rather than guessing from a generic "axe" listing.

Axes & Splitting – Product list
Splitting Mauls and Wedges for Firewood
A splitting maul is heavier than a felling axe, using mass rather than a sharp edge to force logs apart along the grain. The Roughneck Gorilla Splitting Maul 3.6kg and Faithfull Log Splitting Maul FSC Hickory Shaft (available in 2.7kg and 3.6kg) cover general firewood processing, while the Fiskars Norden N12 Splitting Axe uses a lighter head with a more aggressive profile for faster splitting on smaller rounds. For logs that resist a maul, a Bahco Splitting Wedge or the Roughneck Wood Grenade® Splitting Wedge is driven in with a sledgehammer to start or finish a stubborn split.
Felling and Chopping Axes
A felling axe is built for cutting across the grain to bring down small trees, unlike a maul which only splits along it. The Roughneck Felling Axe Fibreglass Handle 2.3kg and Bahco Felling Axe Hickory Handle 3.0kg cover general felling and limbing work. For a lighter, single-hand chopping axe, the Fiskars Norden N7 Chopping Axe 800g and Roughneck FSC® American Hickory Axe 1.6kg suit kindling and smaller branches without the weight of a full felling axe.
Hatchets and Hand Axes
For one-handed use around camp or on site, the Roughneck FSC® American Hickory Hatchet 600g and Bahco Standard Hand Axe HGPS 800g cover general kindling and light chopping. The Estwing Black Eagle Double Bit Axe gives two cutting edges on one head, useful for keeping a sharp edge in reserve when the other dulls. For a premium option, the Hultafors Hatchet 600g and heavier Hultafors Hatchet 900g are forged in Sweden with a traditional profile favoured by bushcraft and forestry users.
Pick Axes and Mattocks
For breaking hard or stony ground, the Roughneck Pick Axe 3.18kg combines a point for breaking and a chisel edge for prying, while the Roughneck Fibreglass Handle Cutter Mattock and Bulldog Cutting and Grubbing Mattock are better suited to cutting through roots and grubbing out vegetation than a standard pick. For lighter jobs, the Roughneck Micro Mattock 400g gives a compact option for tight spaces or smaller-scale groundwork.
Log Tools and Forestry Accessories
Beyond cutting and splitting, the Fiskars WoodXpert™ XA22 Sappie Log Tool and Fiskars WoodXpert™ Log Hook help roll, lift and position logs without bending or lifting by hand, and the Fiskars WoodXpert™ XA3 Brush Hook clears brush and undergrowth ahead of felling work.
Replacement Handles
A cracked or worn handle doesn't always mean replacing the whole tool. The Faithfull FSC Hickory Axe Handle 90cm and Faithfull Hardwood Pick Axe Handle 915mm let you rehang an axe or pick head rather than buying new, and the Faithfull Fibreglass Pick Handle offers a more impact-resistant alternative to timber for heavy daily use.
Warranty and Standards
All axes and splitting tools sold by MTN Shop are genuine stock, sourced through official UK distribution, so full manufacturer warranty applies as it would from the brand directly. Roughneck and Faithfull hickory-handled axes are certified FSC®, confirming the timber is sourced from responsibly managed forests.
Choosing the Right Tool
Splitting and felling are different actions and need different tools: a maul's weight drives a log apart along the grain, while a felling axe's sharper profile is built to cut across it, and using one for the other's job blunts the edge or bounces off the wood rather than cutting cleanly. For repeated daily use, a full-tang or solid-eye head generally outlasts a riveted fitting, which can work loose over time.
