Paint and Decorating: Trade and Retail Range

Our Paint & Decorating collection is the umbrella category for the full decorating, wood care, metal care and surface preparation range at MTN Shop UK. With 1,962 products across 23 brands and 38 product types, the collection covers interior and exterior emulsion, gloss and satinwood, wood stains and preservers, decking treatments, metal paints, spray paints, fillers and primers, painting tools, sealants and wallpapering supplies. The lineup is led by Ronseal (614 products, the largest range in the collection), Rustins (266), PlastiKote (237), Cuprinol (124) and Hammerite (109), with British heritage brands Sadolin, Blackfriar, Brummer® and Purdy® brushes alongside.

The collection is built around the way painters and decorators actually plan a job: the wood care range (stains, oils, preservers, decking treatments) for sheds, fences, gates, garden furniture and timber cladding; the metal paint range (Hammerite hammered, smooth and direct to rust) for railings, gates and ironwork; the interior decorating range (emulsion, gloss, satinwood, primers and fillers) for walls, woodwork and ceilings; and the surface preparation range (fillers, sandpapers, knives, masking) that gets the substrate ready.

For most users the fastest way to browse is by sub-category or brand. Use the links below to skip to the section you need: Ronseal, Cuprinol, Hammerite, Rustins, Sadolin, Blackfriar, PlastiKote, Zinsser, Sikkens and paint brushes across Purdy® and Stanley.

Paint and Decorating at MTN Shop UK

The UK paint and decorating market is one of the most brand specified in DIY and trade: most painters and decorators choose by brand and product reference (a particular Ronseal preserver, a particular Hammerite finish, a particular Rustins clear varnish) rather than by generic category, because each brand has a known performance profile, application method and longevity. Our 1,962 product collection reflects that reality, giving trade users, property managers, landlords, holiday let owners, decorators and committed homeowners access to the full ranges from the brands they specify by name on commercial and domestic jobs.

Ronseal: the largest range in the collection (614 products)

Ronseal is the UK's biggest specialist wood care brand and the largest part of this collection. The range covers shed and fence preservers (the popular Ronseal Shed & Fence Preserver Autumn Brown 5 litre is one of the bestsellers), decking treatments and oils, fence life plus, woodstain and woodwash, garden paints, interior varnishes, quick drying woodstain, and the 5 Year Woodstain and 10 Year Woodstain ranges with the "does what it says on the tin" guarantee. Browse the full Ronseal brand page for the complete range.

Frequently Asked Questions

These four wood finishes do different things. A preserver soaks into the timber and protects against rot, mould and insect attack, with little colour change (use on sheds, fences and rough sawn timber). A woodstain is a coloured finish that lets the grain show through, with weather protection on top (Ronseal Quick Dry Woodstain, Sadolin Classic). A varnish is a clear or coloured film on top of the wood, hard wearing but rebuilds when worn (Rustins Plastic Coating, traditional yacht varnish). A wood oil soaks into the timber and leaves a natural matt finish that is easy to re-apply (Danish Oil, Decking Oil). Trade users often combine these: preserver first on bare timber, then a stain or oil for colour and finish.
Hammerite is the UK's leading direct to rust metal paint. It can be applied straight onto sound rusted metal without separate priming (though loose flaking rust should still be wire brushed off). It comes in hammered (the classic textured finish that disguises imperfections), smooth (flat finish for cleaner aesthetics), satin and aerosol formats, in a range of standard colours. The hammered finish is the traditional specification for wrought iron railings, garden gates, downpipes, garden tools and outdoor metalwork. There is also a Special Metals Primer for galvanised steel, aluminium and chrome surfaces.
Zinsser is a US brand specialising in stain blocking primers, which are the answer to problem walls that bleed through normal emulsion: nicotine staining, water marks, soot, knots in pine, felt tip pen, food and grease stains, and dye bleeding. The two most common references are B-I-N (a shellac based primer that blocks almost anything) and Cover Stain (an oil based primer for porous substrates). Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is the water based version for everyday primer use. Trade decorators reach for Zinsser when they have already had emulsion bleed through and need a guaranteed block coat.
On bare wood, bare metal, bare plaster, plaster that has been heavily repaired with filler, or substrates that have been previously coated with anything glossy or oil based, yes, a primer is the right step. On already painted, sound, water based emulsion you can usually go straight on with a fresh emulsion topcoat. On stained, problem or unknown substrates use a stain blocking primer (Zinsser B-I-N or Cover Stain) rather than a standard primer. Skipping primer where it is needed is the most common reason for paint failure within 18 months.
Purdy® is widely considered the leading premium brush brand among UK and US professional decorators, with the XL Glide and Pro-Extra ranges used for cutting in and laying off emulsion and water based gloss. The synthetic filament holds water based paint better than natural bristle and leaves fewer brush marks. For oil based gloss and varnish the older natural bristle brushes (Hamilton Perfection, traditional decorator brushes from Faithfull and Stanley) still have a place. Brush quality matters more than most other variables in finish quality, and good brushes washed and stored properly last years.
Most of our paint is sold in the manufacturer's standard colour range, which is the most cost effective way to buy. For exact bespoke colour matches across larger trade orders (a specific RAL number, a heritage colour to match an existing wall, or a contract decorating job needing multiple matched tins), request a quote and we will source from the manufacturer. Some ranges (Cuprinol Garden Shades, Ronseal Garden Paint) have a small fixed colour palette designed to coordinate, which can be a faster way to plan a colour scheme.
