Padlocks, door locks and security explained

It spans low-cost general-purpose locking and insurance-rated, attack-resistant hardware from brands such as ABUS, Master Lock and Yale, so it helps to know which standard and format the job actually calls for.
Padlocks, chains and shackles
Padlocks are the largest part of the range. Bodies run from brass and laminated steel up to solid hardened steel and boron alloy, with shackle diameters typically from around 4mm on small luggage and locker locks up to 13mm and above on container and gate padlocks. For exposed gates, plant and yards, weatherproof or marine-grade bodies with shrouded or closed shackles resist both corrosion and bolt cutters. Pair a high-security padlock with a matched hardened chain or ground anchor for bikes, machinery and trailers.
Door locks: mortice locks, euro cylinders and door hardware
For timber doors, the range includes 2-lever and 5-lever mortice deadlocks and sashlocks. For uPVC and composite doors, euro cylinders are the key part, and they must be measured accurately from the central fixing screw to each end. Anti-snap, anti-bump and anti-drill cylinders rated to TS007 3-star, or paired with a 1-star handle, address the cylinder snapping that accounts for many forced entries. Door hardware, handles, escutcheons and replacement parts (for example the Yale PVCu chrome handle) complete a repair or upgrade.
Safes, key safes and lockout/tagout
Key control is covered by lock boxes and cabinets, for example the Master Lock 5400E shackled combination box and the 5401 Select Access box, each holding up to three keys, and combination key cabinets for larger key sets. For documents and valuables there are safes and security chests, including fire and waterproof options. Standards, grades and insurance
UK security hardware is graded against recognised standards. Padlocks are classified under BS EN 12320, cylinders under BS EN 1303 and mechanical locks and latches under BS EN 12209. For insurance, many home policies specify a thief-resistant mortice deadlock to BS 3621 on final exit doors. The independent Sold Secure scheme, run by the Master Locksmiths Association, rates locks Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond by attack resistance, which is a practical shorthand when matching a lock to a risk level.
Choosing the right lock
Start with the threat and the exposure. For a shed or low-risk store, a weatherproof brass or laminated padlock is enough. For gates, containers and plant, step up to a hardened or boron shackle and a closed-shackle body. For insured premises, check the policy wording and fit to BS 3621 or the required Sold Secure grade. For uPVC doors, measure the cylinder before ordering and choose TS007 3-star where snapping is a concern. Where one set of keys should open many locks, specify keyed-alike across the order.
