Waterproof Ratings Explained
Waterproof ratings are measured in mm and usually fall anywhere from 800mm to 10,000 mm. These figures indicate the amount of water pressure a fabric can withstand. For example, a waterproof garment with a 2,000mm rating can endure a 2,000mm column of water bearing down on it before it starts to leak. • 1,500mm – 2,500mm: Suitable for very light showers and everyday use whether it be around town or walking the dog. • 5,000mm - 10,000mm: Suitable for most weather conditions. • 10,000mm and Up: For extremely wet conditions (or to protect you in all weather conditions), a jacket of 10,000mm or above will offer the most protection and also be the most breathable.
What does EN 343 (Standard for Waterproof Workwear) say?
The EN 343 standard promotes two high values: water penetration (or called waterproofness) and water vapour resistance (or called breathability). If a garment is EN343 Class 3.1 certified, the ''3'' indicates the level of waterproofness whereas the ''1'' indicates the level of water vapour resistance. Waterproofness - the larger the figure, the better it is for waterproofness • Class1: ≥ 800 mm [Before pre-treatment] • Class2: ≥ 800 mm [After pre-treatment] • Class3: ≥ 1300 mm [After pre-treatment] • Class4: ≥ 2000 mm [After pre-treatment] Some of our Blaklader waterproof work trousers have a water column of 10,000 mm (such as womens softshell trousers) and even 15,000mm (such as winter hi vis trousers), which means they are way above what the standard defines as waterproof, ideal for challenging work environments to ensure no water penetration.
